The Artemis II Mission proposal

On April 6, the crew members of the Artemis mission proposed two names for two lunar craters, the names by position are Integrity, in honor of the Orion capsule, their ship, and the other would be the name Carol and this is very emotional, because Carol was the wife of Reid Wiseman, the commander of the mission who unfortunately died of cancer, he died in 2020, the moment this request was made was very moving. Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen made the request to mission control and Reid Wiseman was moved and the entire crew hugged each other. I liked this moment. We are human beings and if we don't bring humanity to space, what are we going to take?

They did this when at the time when the distance record set by Apollo They saw the moon quite far away, I mention it because then there are photos that are seen of the dawn of the Earth that are also taken with a zoom, it is not that they passed so close to the Moon.

The Carol crater is a small, quite bright crater, you can see it and it is on the far side, but on the limit. Carol's character would be the limit, the border between the visible side, which would be above, and the hidden side, which would be the entire area below, and the dark part would be the night area on the hidden side of the moon, and all that dark part is what they could not see on the hidden side of the moon. Then they only saw the hidden side of the moon, they only saw that fragment, that region between the crater between the Carol crater and where the shadow of the lunar night already begins.

The interesting thing is that the Carol crater is located right on the border between the two faces, in fact, under certain conditions it can be seen from the Earth, it is curious and I think that no media may have said it, but well, the fact is that the faces of the moon are not completely fixed, the Moon suffers a small rocking that is called lunar vibration, this means that we can see up to 51% of the lunar surface and that the remaining 49% is actually the hidden face, that is, there is no half and half.

The point is that this small crater, about 2.7 km in diameter and quite bright, making it easy to locate, has a curious characteristic that is on the border, in that area where the libration we can see in some months or at some times of the year we can see it and other times not, seeing the sunrise or the setting of the Earth, the famous photo of the Earth dawning that they have published now, is only possible if you are in a ship orbiting the Moon, you could only see the sunrise as it appears. Earth or how it sets on the lunar horizon if you are orbiting the Moon in a ship, because if you were standing on the surface of the Moon, you would always see the Earth in the same place in the sky, without moving, being clear, on the visible side, if you were on the far side, you would never see the Earth.

But this Carol crater is in a very special place, on that edge that wobbles, so there you could slowly see the sunrise and sunset of the Earth, which would be quite spectacular, by the way. It would be a good place to put a lunar hotel, because you would have that view of the sunset and sunrise of the Earth. It would take several days, yes, it would be quite slow and it is an acceptable size to place a facility inside because a base on the Moon like the one that both China and the United States are already planning.

A base on the Moon would have to be inside a crater and not very large, because the walls of the crater serve as protection, not only because of the issue of cosmic radiation, which they protect a little, but also from micrometeorites, when an asteroid hits the Moon, a multitude of fragments fly away and it does not happen like here on Earth, where between the Earth's atmosphere and the Earth's gravity, the fragment ends up falling after a few hundred meters, at most a few kilometers, on the Moon it is flying at high speed for a long time until it hits the wall of a mountain or the wall of a crater.

A lunar base. It will be almost like a bunker and a lunar hotel will also be like a bunker, although with some small windows to see the landscape, but it will be like a bunker and will have to be located inside a crater to have a little more protection, so that Carol crater is in a very interesting place.

To finish, the Integrity crater, which is proposed in honor of the name of the Orion capsule, is larger, it is about 6 km in diameter and it is on the full hidden side of the Moon and also close to the Equator, that is, Integrity would already be on the hidden side, we would no longer see it there and being on the hidden side and being close to the Equator, it could be an interesting place to build one of the dreams of all astronomers in the world, a radio telescope on the moon would have to be on the far side because then it would be free of radio wave interference, pollution of all kinds that we emit from the Earth. From the moon, a radio telescope would have tremendous sensitivity.
