The asteroid Apophis is a destroyer of worlds.

In space there are serious threats from asteroids and not only from asteroids, but also from comets because comets can be much more dangerous than asteroids because at any moment a new comet can appear that arrives from the Oor cloud or the Kuiper belt and that comes on a collision course with the earth, Luckily, the bigger the comet, the sooner we can detect it and the sooner we can do something to try to avoid catastrophe.

In fact, I think that the current census was around a million and something asteroids already registered, but as I say, we cannot know all the comets that are out there and the interactions they can have with, for example, dwarf planets.

On this path of exploration we find mysteries, obstacles and problems, science is ultimately dedicated to solving mysteries, they are like the Sherlock Holmes of the universe, they are all challenges that we must solve to expand our knowledge and improve our evolution as a civilization and also as a species.

There are a multitude of challenges, we cannot overcome them all, we must at least take the necessary steps so that future generations can end up overcoming them, it is what that old motto that says we must leave the world a little better than we have found it.

One of the challenges as a civilization is the threat of asteroids and comets, one in particular is Apophis, a potentially dangerous asteroid. This will be the first challenge as a civilization and we know more and more data about it and we can refine the forecast of what may happen. and we also know more and more things about other asteroids and comets and we can also predict what is going to happen, when? We don't know exactly, but we have a margin of time of about 100 years in which all the objects that we know in the Cosmos Whether comets or asteroids, we know that in that 100-year window there are none that are a real risk for the Earth.

There are some with a very low risk of one chance in one in a million, but the margins would be very ridiculous and the fundamental problem would be comets, but even large comets, for example right now there is a giant comet measuring 130 km in length, it was detected a few years ago. 15 years and we know that it will not pass beyond the orbit of Saturn, but one can appear at any time, but at least we will have a margin of many years to be able to do something, put into practice some planetary defense plan.

We have the capacity to be able to respond for the first time in the history of humanity, this does not mean that an Apophis impact does not cause damage but it certainly would not mean the destruction of the planet, it would not be a planet killer as some media indicate, for That would require a dwarf planet or something even larger and even then the molten mass of the Earth would come together again to form a new planet, in fact that has already happened, it happened to the Earth in its origin when a planet the size of Theia collided with from Mars.

Apophis would not be the end of life on Earth, for that would require an object 100 km or larger, although one of several tens of kilometers and depending on the speed and some special circumstances, it could kill all life on Earth. planet and Apophis would not cause a mass extinction either. The last mass extinction caused by an asteroid was the Chicxulub impact, which is estimated to have been an asteroid that was between 13 to 14 km in diameter and would not be the end of civilization either. human, but it would do a lot of damage, because we are talking about Apophis, an asteroid that is only 370 m in maximum diameter because it is irregular and we are talking about 370 meters, not kilometers.

It is not a giant asteroid, it is not a planet killer, Apophis is a medium-sized asteroid, on the small side and this is not to make the matter less serious, it is simply to put ourselves in a situation since an Apophis impact would cause a lot of damage.
