We still do not know if or when our species will begin to live on a permanent lunar base, mainly due to the extreme challenges and even the current delays of the Artemis II mission, because it is no longer enough to land on the Moon, it is necessary to build on it and that is why a new approach is emerging, before sending humans to stay there, they are planning to send machines, Astroport developed a system that can become the base of lunar construction, a kind of automated excavator designed to operate directly on the surface of the Moon.

But it does not work alone, this machine is part of a modular system coupled to a robotic vehicle capable of transporting different tools, as if it were a fully automated construction site; In recent tests, this technology has already proven capable of moving large amounts of lunar soil. simulated in a few minutes, but the objective goes much further, these machines will be responsible for preparing the ground before the future longer stay of the astronauts.

They will be creating roads, landing platforms and safe areas for future construction, and there is an impressive detail, lunar dust can be transformed, using extreme heat, it can melt and become solid surfaces, as if the soil of the moon itself were used as construction material, this means that instead of bringing everything from Earth, the infrastructure can be created directly in the lunar environment, and that completely changes the logic of space exploration, because for the first time we are not just planning to visit another celestial body, we are preparing to stay on it and this requires scale.

These machines will need to move thousands of tons of material to create a functional base and more than that, paving the way for something even greater, an economy outside of Earth with mining, infrastructure and even extraction of rare resources such as Helium 3, considered by many a possible key to the energy of the future, may seem distant, but the reality is that all of this has already begun to be prepared, while some technologies are designed to operate outside of Earth, others are already transforming what happens down here in real time.
