The current status of lunar missions.

Souce

NASA is really capable of doing what it says it wants to do, because the lunar landings in recent years have been quite, let's say, disastrous, only one success in four attempts, Intuitive Machine sent two ships, both overturned, the experts warned them that they had to change the design of the ship, since its module is very high and the low lunar gravity penalizes those ships or modules that have very high centers of mass, the lower the center of mass, the better.

Astrobotic sent the Peregrin spacecraft in January 2024, it failed en route and was lost. The only success so far came in March 2025 with the Blue Ghost from the Fireflight company, it landed perfectly, operated for 14 days and met all objectives. At this point, the question is obvious, what is happening? because then we see the other competitor in this race to conquer the Moon, China and China has a 100% success rate of landing on the Moon, four attempts, four triumphs and on the 28th we received another slap in the face of harsh reality.

NASA's next lunar mission will be the Moon Bass 1 Lander with the Blue Moon Mark 1 ship called Endurance bound for the Suckelton ridge at the south pole of the moon. This ship is from the Blue Moon company and will be launched in the fall of 2026 by means of a New Glenn rocket, one like this one that exploded on March 28, 2026 during a static ignition test on the LC36 platform at Cape Canaveral in Florida. Blue Moon has said that It was an anomaly during engine testing, an anomaly equivalent to the explosion of several hundred tons of TNT.

The rocket was being prepared for the NG4 mission, which would carry 48 satellites of the Amazon Leo constellation. Fortunately, there were no injuries, nor were there satellites on board, all personnel are safe, but the entire rocket, first and second stage, about 98 m high, was destroyed. In fact, the explosion caused significant damage to the platform, including the demolition of a lightning tower about 180 m high. It is bad news, although it may not be as important as the media appears, it falls within what would be normal to develop new technologies and equipment as complex as a heavy-lift rocket like the New Glenn, it would be comparable to the accidents of the first airplanes and that does not stop the development of aviation.

This is not the end, as some media seem to imply, the destruction of the rocket with which Jeep Bezos wants to reach the moon, I do not think that Jeep Bezos currently wants to reach the moon, surely in the future when the lunar hotels are open and to spend a few days there, but I guarantee you that where this rocket that has been destroyed came from, there are more, they are in production and this rocket will not be the last, but all this does not mean that the accident has no consequences, for the moment it will mean a delay in the launch of the NG4 mission and will probably require months of repairs on the only platform compatible with this New Glen rocket. In addition, Blue Origin is going to face an investigation by the FAA, acronym in English for the Federal Aviation Administration, a nightmare, by the way, for Elon Musk and his Starship.

Jeff Bezos and the company have said that they will investigate what has happened, rebuild the platform and the destroyed elements and move on, however, the question remains, what is happening? NASA, like the Soviet Union, suffered many failures until it managed to learn how to land on the Moon and once it achieved it, the success rate was almost total, I say almost because there is the Apollo XIII accident, although it never landed, at least they arrived safely on Earth, what is evident is that NASA managed to land its ships on the Moon at the time when supercomputers were less intelligent than our washing machines.

When Neil Arstrom set foot on the Moon for the first time on July 20, 1969, he was temporarily closer to the planes of the First World War than to us. In the 21st century, NASA has forgotten how to land on the Moon. There are those who argue that now what is intended is to change the system, to open up to private companies, to make missions that are cheaper to promote the development of the economy in space.

It is a story that sounds good and perhaps we are only at the beginning of this new working method, but do you think that in the end they will be able to bring the necessary material to create the lunar base without having to leave a trail of explosions, destroyed or lost ships on the moon?

It’s proper embarrassing how badly the West is bleeding cash on this new space race. Landing on the moon fifty odd years ago with computers weaker than a toaster, but now we’re just building top-heavy rubbish that falls over or literally blows up on the launchpad.

That New Glenn explosion was a total shitshow. Rebuilding a massive lightning tower because of an "anomaly" is corporate speak for "we completely stuffed up." Private tech companies keep overpromising, but currently, China is absolutely wiping the floor with us. It’s hard to watch. Cool summary of the chaos, though.
