The first autonomous war helicopter

The silent war underwater has just gained a new hunter, on January 16, the autonomous helicopter Proteus, developed by Leonardo for the British Royal Navy, made its maiden flight, marking a decisive step in the integration between manned forces and systems controlled by artificial intelligence.

It is not just another military drone, it is a full-scale helicopter with three tons, a load capacity of one ton, a maximum speed of 260 km/h and autonomy of up to 5 hours of flight. Its main mission is anti-submarine warfare. The Proteus launch comes amid a strategic reconfiguration of British defense based on the 2025 strategic defense review.

The new model does not rely exclusively on ships, submarines and manned aircraft, the proposal is a hybrid wing, a combination of conventional platforms with autonomous systems operating together. Proteus is a central piece of that gear. Unlike traditional drones, it is not just remotely piloted. Its internal software allows autonomous decision-making during the mission, a capacity that will be expanded as the tests evolve.

Its appearance will likely change as the technology matures, but the concept is already clear, the war of the future will be unmanned, connected and largely assisted by artificial intelligence.
