The first particle collider designed and operated by AI

Scientists are working on what could become the world's first particle collider, designed with native artificial intelligence integrated directly into its infrastructure. The project is called the electro-ion collector or simply AIC, and when it comes into operation, probably in the mid-2030s, it will have to process around 500,000 particle collisions per second.

And the most impressive thing, however, is the fact that humans simply cannot manually control something so complex in real time, inside the accelerator, the particles will circulate in opposite directions in a ring of almost 4 km at speeds close to light, keeping everything stable requires monitoring tens of thousands of parameters simultaneously, intensity of the beams, magnetic alignment, vibration, temperature, synchronization and behavior of the particles.

All of the above is too much information even for entire teams of specialists to continually track, so the researchers decided something different: instead of operating the accelerator solely with human help, the system was designed to learn on its own. Machine learning algorithms will continually observe the behavior of the aces and automatically adjust controls to maintain operational stability.

The accelerator begins to function as a partially autonomous organism and this is already being tested. Researchers used experimental systems in the current Brook Haven accelerators and achieved that the algorithms reached levels of stability comparable to those of extremely experienced human operators. Based on these tests, the AI systems will be responsible for separating signal from noise in real time, reconstructing physical events from the traces left by the particles inside the detector.

The machine will not only perform the experiments, it will also help interpret the universe itself as the data emerges, except that all this artificial intelligence has a gigantic physical cost, because behind the machines that begin to think for themselves there is an infrastructure consuming energy on an increasingly larger scale.
