The next big evolution of the sector

A Chinese company could be about to achieve what the automotive industry has been trying to achieve for more than a decade, transforming solid-state batteries into a real market product. Greater Bay Technology, a company backed by the automotive group Gek Group, announced the development of its first sample cells of a totally solid-state battery with an energy density of up to 500 WH per kilo.

If this is confirmed on an industrial scale, we would be talking about a huge leap for electric vehicles; solid-state batteries are considered by many specialists to be the next great evolution of the sector. They promise three advantages at the same time, more security, more autonomy and faster recharging.

In current batteries there is liquid electrolyte, a component that can represent a risk in extreme situations. In this new project, the company plans to use a completely solid system without flammable liquids. A density of 500 W hours per kilo could allow autonomy much greater than the current ones or smaller and lighter batteries for the same distance. This means more efficient, faster and potentially cheaper cars in the future.

Greater Bay says it aims to start gigawatt-hour-scale production by the end of 2026. If it meets that timeline, it could become the world's first company to take an all-solid-state battery from the lab to large-scale commercial production.

This would place China even further ahead in a dispute that it already dominates, today the country concentrates a large part of the global chain of batteries, critical minerals and electric vehicle manufacturing, now it also wants to lead the next generation of this technology, when a company announces not only performance, but also a ready production line, the market pays attention because the moment solid batteries really hit the streets, the automotive sector can change phase.
