The first electric charging robot

The energy goes to the car

And one of the biggest limitations of electric cars has always been the same, where to charge, but that logic could be about to change, CATL, one of the largest battery manufacturers in the world, presented an autonomous robot capable of bringing energy directly to the car, without a fixed station, without a specific place, without complex infrastructure. Simply park and call the charger from the app.

The robot navigates itself to the vehicle, connects automatically and starts charging. In practice, any parking space can become a charging point and that solves one of the biggest bottlenecks of electric mobility, because in older or denser cities installing fixed chargers is expensive, slow and often unfeasible. Now, instead of taking the car to the power, the power goes to the car.

The system works as a mobile power bank.

The robot has a 100 kWh battery and offers 120 kW fast charging, levels comparable to modern stations and all this with autonomous navigation. It uses sensors such as radar and 3D vision to move around the environment, find the vehicle and make the connection without human intervention. Testing is already happening in China, including in residential areas where hundreds of electric cars compete for few charging options, and the results show a direct efficiency gain.

A car with a low battery can reach a usable level in less than an hour without queuing or traveling, without depending on fixed infrastructure, and that reveals an important change. Until now the dominant model has always been based on stations, but this type of solution points to a different scenario. Infrastructure on demand. Instead of building more fixed points, the system adapts to the user.

CATL already has dozens of units in operation and plans to expand this technology to other markets in the coming years and this robot is just part of a larger movement, the company is also integrating artificial intelligence into industrial processes and automated services, showing that it is not only developing batteries, but an entire ecosystem around them.

And this idea of bringing technology to where the consumer is, instead of him going to it, is not only happening with energy, in some cities it is already arriving in a much more visible and perhaps much more controversial way.
