In 2017, I saw the total solar eclipse in Everett, Washington. It was breathtaking, and the event was one I will remember for life. I am glad I witnessed this, and urge you to do the same safely if you can. There are some important safety measures you can take to enjoy the eclipse and avoid the risk of loss during the momentous event.

April 8th, 2024 will be a total solar eclipse with a path of totality over the Eastern United States. The event of a total eclipse is when the Moon and Sun line up to project a shadow over the Earth. It's breathtaking and takes place over several hours. It's a progression of a shadow that travels from the South East of the United States to the Atlantic Ocean. Some major cities in which the eclipse will be visible include Little Rock, Arkansas; Buffalo, New York; Lancaster, New Hampshire and Burlington, Vermont.

If you plan to see this event, get eclipse safety shades that protect you from IR and UV. Make sure you take into account the traffic that will result from thousands of tourists departing after the eclipse has passed. If you plan on watching the event, avoid leaving immediately and take you time leaving the area. Stay overnight if you can and avoid the roads when the crowds make their way home.

Make sure you get the proper shaded viewing glasses for the eclipse. If you're a welder, make sure your welding shade is 13, as most other shades will be inadequate to safely view the eclipse. Make sure your shade glasses are rated by ISO and do not look at the eclipse with regular sun glasses, as they will not protect your eyes from the Sun. Normal shades only block 10-20% of the Sun's light and UV and IR protection is minimal. Make sure you buy eclipse shades with an ISO marking from a reputable dealer. Avoid bargain shades, as they may prove to be counterfeit.

Have fun and stay safe during the eclipse. It's a great event you will remember forever.
