Architectural Photography - Week 65 | Alhambra de Granada

in CCS27 days ago
During our recent business trip, my colleague and I decided to take a short break and visit one of the most famous landmarks in Spain, the Alhambra de Granada. Our friends highly recommended us to see this UNESCO World Heritage Site and we couldn't resist the opportunity to see this beauty with our own eyes.

As we entered the gates of the Alhambra, we were awed by the view of the Generalife Gardens, which were used for entertainment by the Moorish rulers centuries ago. These extensive gardens include various fountains, pools and canals, all connected by a complex network of irrigation systems. Walking through these green spaces, we really felt the peace and harmony that reigned here. One of the most notable structures in the complex is the Comares Palace, which showcases an exquisite combination of Moorish and Renaissance architecture. Its ornate halls, especially the Hall of Ambassadors, display intricate geometric patterns and calligraphic inscriptions that captivate the imagination. Another highlight was the Nasrid Palace, where we saw the private quarters of the emirs of the Nasrid dynasty. We were amazed by the intricate ornaments and details on the ceilings, the beautifully decorated walls and the intricate design of the marble floor.

Moorish architecture, also known as Islamic or Arabic architecture, is characterized by its elegance, sophistication and attention to detail. In the Alhambra, this architecture is evident in the use of geometric patterns, pointed arches, and intricate ornamentation made of plaster, marble, and colored stucco. These decorative elements often include verses from the Qur'an, floral motifs, and geometric shapes that create a visually appealing and spiritually meaningful environment.

From the top of the Alcazaba, the main fortress of the Alhambra, there are panoramic views of the city of Granada and its surroundings. This strategic position provides an opportunity to admire the towering cathedral and the labyrinthine streets of the old town while enjoying the fresh mountain air.

I can unequivocally say that our short detour to the Alhambra de Granada during our business trip turned out to be extremely rewarding. This World Heritage Site impressed us with the rich history and culture of Andalucía and will surely remain in our memories long after we return home and tell our colleagues and friends :)
