I’d imagine that everyone kept an eye on each other a bit back then, and that any attempts would be made at night, although it is a bit strange that this happened within the same household… Perhaps the drunk man felalls down those weird stair in the middle of the night? And that will wake up the rest of the family. They certainly didn’t have a guard dog.
