You are only required to have the state Driver's License, that is used as the default ID, on your person if you are driving. There is no law requiring you to have it on your person if you are just walking or bicycling somewhere or riding in someone else's vehicle. Other than that everything else you stated is on point.

Because a police officer can arrest/detain you until you provide proof of who you are. Which, in their mind, is a drivers license.

You are being suspicious because you are not providing ID…

Yes, what you said is absolutely, legally correct, but people get taken into custody for not having an ID all the time.
