My Creative Writing: "Mbopo" A Tradition In Ibibio Land
'Mbopo' is a tradition in Ibibio Land and it is often carried out when a woman is married and gives birth to her first child, the bride's mother will take her daughter home and takes care of her and her baby, feeds her to stupor and also massages her to be more bold and beautiful but in my case, I was not massaged because, I already have bold and thick and beautiful body.
And at the end of three months, the groom's family will collect a list and provide all the items on the list. A ceremonial day will be fixed and the groom's family will dance into the bride's family with all the items on the list and the bride's mother will receive them with a bottle wine and a bottle of hot drink.
And then, the bride's family will host the groom's family with assorted food and drinks. Indeed, it's always a day of merriment.
Before the arrival of the bride's inlaws, she'll be dressed in a traditional attire called "mkpin" and will be rubbed with palm oil all over her body and this is where the origin of the traditional name "Mbopo" came from thus; the saying "Mbopo Uma Nsido Ubok Aran" (In pidgin it's interpreted as; if a fatty woman loves you wetin be hand oil) lol.
She'll be ushers out by her people to come and and greet her in-laws and then proceeds to dance with her husband. Meanwhile, anybody hugged or greeted by the bride dies not go back home the same because his or her clothes will be stained with the oil and automatically the clothes are condemned.
So, at this point when I came out, my husband was running away from me... Lol! But I finally grabbed him and gave him a sweet dance that changed his clothes to oil... Smiles! Was I wicked? No! That's the fun part of the ceremony and everyone was just smiling capturing the exciting moments of husband and wife dancing.
The bride's mother will be called out and be decorated with clothes and wine while receiving all the items that was on the list.
The groom's family and all the guests present will be entertained with food, drinks and chewables and after the entertainments comes photo session with family and friends and then music! Music!! Music!!! Till the light fades.
Finally, the bride may decide to follow her husband home that same day or better still after the child's christening before going back home. Thanks for your time. Hope you learnt new thing today about Ibibio tradition.
