The Screen Addict | Point Break

Watching films often makes me think of certain other films that have a similar theme, storyline or atmosphere. Revisiting Heat (1995) for example, got me in the mood to see Kathryn Bigelow’s superior Heist-Surf-Action-Thriller Point Break (1991) for the gazillionth time.

I am happy to report that thirty years on, the film hasn’t lost any of its kinetic sparkle. I was introducing someone who had never seen it to the Keanu Reeves - Patrick Swayze vehicle, and what struck me was that – aside from the obviously outdated technology – my viewing-partner confirmed that it still looks like a contemporary Action film. This is testament to Bigelow’s incredible filmmaking-instinct, and it is the reason why I consider her to be one of the best filmmakers working today.

The PB viewing party also made me think of the 2015 remake I acquired some years ago. Reading that script, I thought it was a pretty solid idea – the focus had shifted more to modern-day extreme sports and early test footage teased big-screen friendly sequences featuring wingsuit jumps through perilous canyons.

Replacing Bigelow was Ericson Core, a filmmaker I knew primarily from his work as a cinematographer. Core had big shoes to fill, but I remember thinking that a project like this would definitely benefit from someone with a strong visual signature.

The end result was – in my opinion – a fine picture, but it failed to entice moviegoers on the level it needed to justify the budget. Still, I feel that the remake deserves more love than it initially got, so please find it on whatever platform acquired it in your territory and let me know your thoughts.
