Do we need a special day to be human?

How are you all? I hope that wherever you are, you are healthy and well. After a long time, I have come to share some things that have been stored in my mind with you. In fact, when I see the society and the lives of people around me, sometimes such thoughts come to mind that shake our conscience. I came to know one such thing today through a friend of mine, and that is— “If there were a rice or bread day, the helpless people could eat their fill for a day.”

Although the saying is small, its depth is very deep. We usually see many types of days on the pages of the calendar! Mother's Day, Father's Day, Valentine's Day, and even days are celebrated in the name of a specific flower or color. But among these very familiar days, no day is directly related to human hunger. This keyword or this sentence basically highlights an extreme reality of our society. It means that, as much as we are busy with festivals and formalities, we do not think about the basic needs of hungry people. If there were a national or international ‘Rice or Bread Day’, maybe the wealthy, i.e., society, would have given at least one meal to the helpless hungry people on that day, even if it was to show off.

I think this sentence is actually a kind of satire on our humanity. When we waste food in an expensive restaurant, at that very moment, someone at the street corner might be sighing for a handful of rice. If there were a day when everyone had to compulsorily feed the hungry, maybe those people would not have spent at least one day in uncertainty. There was no need for a special day to eliminate this inequality around us, but in the current context, it seems that, apart from festivals, we have probably forgotten to donate.

I personally think that this line of thinking shows us that in the rush of luxury, we are neglecting the most simple but most urgent needs of life. Rice or bread is not just food, it is a human right to survive. But if we have to wait for a day to ensure that right, it is a big failure for our civilization.

Finally, let us not wait for any special day, but stand by the hungry people according to our ability. Celebrating the day is not bad, but if that day cannot provide food to the hungry, then what is its significance? Our small efforts can bring smiles to these dirty faces of society. Everyone, stay well, and try to take responsibility for at least one meal for a helpless person around you. Thank you.
