C'est la vie - Thoughtful Daily Post

Last night our local news anchor aired an interview from one of our street reporters who conducted in interview with an older gentlemen about the coronavirus. The reporter asked the gentlemen whether he was concerned about contracting the virus and what he was doing to protect himself.

I sat there in amazement at the answer the gentlemen gave. I actually did a double take when he responded that he didn't care. He was going to go about his daily routine as if not is going one. He ended with "if I catch it, so be it. I'm going to die from something."

I couldn't believe this person's cavalier attitude about something as serious as a contagious virus. I could tell the reporter was stunned as she took a second to recap to her news anchors. The anchors were also at a loss for words and just looked at each other for a moment. I know for a fact that in any unknown situation, panic is the last thing that is needed nor should be encouraged. But basic precautions for your safety is and should be warranted. I thought about whether that gentleman had a family. Does he have a spouse, children, grandchildren, and neighbors. Doesn't he care about them? He's out and about in his neighborhood and other communities mingling and going about his daily life.

No one on this planet lives in a vacuum. Your entire life is intertwined with others, whether known or unknown. If one doesn't care about themselves, so be it. But don't involve others in a decision such as he made about his health and safety. Just some basic precautions are called for. You're not able to protect everyone, nor should you even try. But you can do your part to keep yourself and your family out of harm's way. My fear is for our seniors who already are dealing with underlying health issues. They are so vulnerable. And for the children, because they are our future.

So I woke this morning thinking about what the gentleman had said. It perturbed me as I wondered if there were others who may have a similar attitude. I had planned a shopping trip last week to complete some first-of-the-month shopping. Having procrastinated for about three months restocking our pantry, I decided today was a good one to venture out and replenish supplies that had fallen below my required stock level. Two of the items I was going to include in my shopping trip were disinfectant wipes and antibacterial hand soap.

Once we headed out, I thought about the several places on my list I needed to visit. Then I thought again about the gentleman's attitude. I only hope that I never encounter him. With that in mind, I took the basic precautions outlined by the health departments. When I arrived at the store, I even wiped off the handles of the shopping carts with the antibacterial wipes provided inside. I was thankful for that, even though I had brought my own.

You wouldn't believe the shelves were empty of all disinfectant items at this particular grocers. I was a bit surprised to see this happen so quickly. I wasn't the only one stocking up. So I headed out to my second store. Same result. I did pick up a few bottles of R.W. Knudsen's Organic Carrot Ginger Tumeric juice. This juice will definitely aid in keeping me as healthy as I can with my pre-existing medical conditions. Tumeric is an excellent antioxidant and helps lower your HBP. Couldn't wait to return home to try it out. Looks ominous, but not bad tasting. Think I'll find a smoothie recipe that will mix well with the ingredients in the juice.

Even though I wasn't able to secure several items on my list during this shopping trip, I'll make another trip next week. I was happy, though, to see that like-minded people were responding the same way. The message is to take this virus seriously, don't panic, and take the necessary precautions indicated by health professionals. Seems like the need for caution is already on the minds of others. I appreciated that because in this particular situation, it's certainly not C'est la vie.

Earlier today, the first couple of cases were confirmed here in our relatively small (10,000 people) somewhat remote community; a couple of kids at the high school. They have mild symptoms and are in voluntary quarantine.

Part of me actually understands the older gentleman... you get to a point where you have to decide whether to live in constant fear, or simply be philosophical about the fact that dying is a natural part of life.

However, taking reasonable precautions to not get ill makes sense... at any time.

Tens of millions of people will get affected by the coronavirus. Most of them will simply have a few cold-like symptoms and get better, and were it not for the publicity storm, they would simply have thought they had a cold. According to the CDC, 34,000 people died from the flu in 2019... and we pretty much heard nothing about them...

For me, the most important thing here, is simply to keep a balanced perspective and not get caught up in the fear-mongering...

Hi @denmarkguy. This will spread. How far and wide is undeterminable. All we can do is our own basic safety health precautions for ourselves and our family. Me. I choose to be cautious for myself and my family. I have grandchildren, so I will do anything in my power to protect them. That being said, the only things we can do is to take the advice of health professionals and then take the necessary steps to proceed with safety.

I don't think anyone should want to voluntarily get sick or expose themselves unnecessarily. No matter what the age, I feel just basic steps to keep yourself healthy is reasonable. Then you can go about your daily life.

I myself choose to be optimistically cautious and just make sure I'm doing what I need to stay healthy. No matter any publicity storm, common sense must prevail when dealing with your health I would hope.

The great thing about it is that one gets to choose which way they would like go.

Interesting post!
I have to admit though...
I do not feel a lot different
than the gentleman You mention,
must be the "View" older people
have of living in this society
in general...🤔
Have A Blessed Week!

Hi @lesmann. How are you? Thanks for stopping by and viewing my post. People do tend to look at situations through a different lens when they older compared to when they are at any other period in their lives. I am a senior citizen. But I also have children and grandchildren to think of. So I'm a bit more cautious perhaps. Appreciate your candor.

Well (*this may be shocking as well)
Having children and grandchildren are definite concerns and I would probably think differently in that type of situation.
I have none Myself. I decided long ago...
"To curse another to this world, knowingly - just because I want one, or to keep the name going is a wrong that's more than I can bear"

I understand completely. It's a free choice everyone has. Once you do decide to have children, you make different choices. And thank you for your insight. There is always going to be a differing of opinion on any topic. I value others. The willingness to listen and look at another viewpoint is critical to any relationship, whether family, friend, or supporter.

Take care the rest of your week ahead.

Thank You,
And You are 💯% correct!
And I do respect Your choices as well!
Wish You A Wonderful Week As Well!!!
