My bagged ginger farming method: Testing alternative for more produce
Plants are not just planted on lands alone nowadays. Bag or sack farming is now becoming a popular style of farming. Even in containers, crops could be planted in it. The farming style is done in urban areas or cities where there are shortage of lands for planting. So farmers who don't have space to do Farming would want to have some crops or vegetables on their own soil.
The farmers would find a fertile soil and fill the soil in bags or containers. They would mix it with manures to make it rich in fertility. The crops would now be planted in the bags or containers as the case may be. Farmers who have practiced this method say it produces good crops if it is done with proper care.
I'm really becoming more passionate about ginger farming and seeking means of expanding my ginger farm. This is my first attempt to engage in ginger farming. Although I have planted a good quantity of ginger in the farm, this other side of the bagged ginger farm is to test between the direct soil ginger planting and the bagged ginger planting styles. It is also to add to the quantity of my ginger plants.
I am not leaving anything to chances by just leaving the soil in the bag the way it is. I mixed some manures together with the soil and bagged them. The manure is to support the soil to be more fertile. So I have applied some manures to it before and after the planting.
Every efforts I'm making is to increase my ginger farm next year. I want have more portions of ginger farmland and plants. If I'm this year to test-run. As ginger has behen discovered to possess a lot of benefits to human health, the demand for is increasing by the day. I now have to think of another alternative to increase the quantity of ginger that I would like to harvest.
There are opinions that planting crops in bags also yields better. Crops like yam, corn, pepper, vegetables, can be planted using bags. To see how this farming style could make crops yield better, I used ginger to carry it out. This style of farming seems to have its pros and cons.
The Pros and Cons of bag or container farming method

This farming practice comes with its own benefits and challenges also. Some of them as has been discovered by farmers are lined below:
The Pros
The bags or containers could be moved from one position to another during favorable or unfavorable weather or climate conditions.
It serves as a good alternative where there no good soil for farming
Ordinarily, spaces that would be used for farming are now useful for planting.
Weeds lose competing with the plants because few of them grow in the bags or containers
Bag or container farming makes harvesting easier
As the soil is mixed with other manures, the soil nutrients would be managed well
The soil nutrients can easily be washed while watering the plants
It doesn't have enough space for crop root penetration
Hot weather conditions could cause the bags or containers to generate more heat that may cause poor or low yield
The bags does not last so it can tear and it would affect the growth of the plant
It could be labour intensive for large scale farmers
I have carefully noted the disadvantages of this farming method and I'm putting measures in place to avert its consequences.
In my subsequent post, I would also be sharing the performance of the ginger in terms of it growth in the bags.
