For this week's pick and write contest, we have to talk about organic food.

Eating organic has become a requirement for me. But it gets difficult to understand the numbers. I am an advocate for saving bees but, there is something called the yield gap, which cannot be ignored. With new research done, organic farms can produce about 35% to 40% less than non organic ones. In case this happens across the whole planet, it means that more land will have to be used for food production, which you know that means deforestation is around the corner.

Sri Lanka is a great example. This country attempted to adopt the practice of organic farming too quickly, and that led to negative outcomes. The government failed to negotiate with farmers and give them technical assistance. So that's why a proper strategy is important if we want to ensure that the soil condition and the national economy is intact.

A lot of us have grown fond of regenerative agriculture. Regenerative maize was proved to store even more carbon than organic maize and its ecological footprint is lower as well. Although, we also see that regenerative farming lacks the legal definition and organic is already strictly regulated by law. That's why consumers are motivated to trust organic stuff.

Organic farming pushes for a high level of soil diversity and in the end, improves soil health as opposed to other ways of farming. They're also using a lower amount of pesticides and toxic substances in the process. Our planet is full of limitations and we need to apply this approach to organic farming as well. Organic agriculture cannot be seen as a religion but we can use as a tool in our arsenal. There needs to be a system that maintains soil sustainability but not at the cost of 35% yield loss, I hope you agree with me on this.
