The blooming of lavender
Was searching for something related to flowers on quora and I noticed that the repeated questions asked about lavender are when do they bloom. There is no simple answer, which makes it difficult. The popular thought is a month for lavender blooms, perhaps June. That may be for Provence, France, but that is not true for many other places around the world.
In an area at Aburi, a friend of mine attempted to grow lavender. The plant did not thrive and struggled, there was confusion during the rainy season with regards to when it would bloom. It actually bloomed during November. As a whole, it looked like a sad broken lump of lavender but at least it smelled nice.
The growing period for lavender generally is from late spring to early summer or occupation of temperate climate zones with lots of sun as well as good draining soil conditions. That same friend had grown lavender which died in a clay pot because of bad drainage so please if you're growing them, careful with drainage.
There are also two varieties of Lavender, English versus French. The English variety blooms before the French variety. Unfortunately the labels on all of the lavender plants in the Garden Centre were faded.
When you see fields of lavender in pictures, you see a sea of purple. The fields are not uniformly blooming, because obviously each plant has a different rate of growing and developing. As you can imagine, you may see many stalks of flowers already turning grey while some other stalks are still in that tight bud stage.
I had planned a trip to visit a lavender farm. I did not take the trip because I was relying on the opinion of someone who wrote a blog post about it and the timing of the trip was supposed to be perfect. Unfortunately, any such experience is not guaranteed, the weather can dramatically shift at a moment's notice.
When looking for lavender blooms, the best indicator to look for is bees. When you see bees all over the flowers, they are most likely blooming. So forget about what the calendar shows for when the lavender will bloom. When to plant or when the blooms happen really depends on the individual plant. If you don't have experience owning a lavender plant, it will be a guessing game.
