What's really happening with ants moving around randomly?
This is a very cool thing I saw and I wanted to share with all of you on steemit. I've seen this so many times and I'm sure you've seen it at least once. There's a crowd of ants, some have wings, some don't and they're moving around. So what's happening?
If you see a scene like that, don't be bothered thinking your entire house will soon be invaded, they're actually just moving.
The official name for it is nuptial flight. When you look at it, it's like a marker square with people all over but but it is actually a highly organized moving day. The white things you are seeing on the back of some of them are wings, just in case you didn't spot that. First time I saw, I thought it was some carrying rice then I looked closer and saw the wings.
The normal worker ants have come out to guard the entire perimeter. Funny for me because they are so small picking up security role like that. The new kings and queens, with twings are getting ready to fly out. They're going to mate and start entirely new colonies elsewhere. That's how you keeps seeing ants spread so fast.
You can't ever compare population size of ants to us people. We are celebrating 8 billion and they are estimated to be over 20 quadrillion. To put into perspective, 1 quadrillion is you counting one thousand of a billion.
The one thing I don't want is to have a bunch of ants crawling all over me. So when I see things like this I try to stay away. They can easily climb using your legs.
