Share your knowledge about solar power with us by reading our lesson.

Solar power is a modern energy source that captures sunlight and converts it into electricity. It is the easiest and most sustainable way to generate electricity, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and dependence on fossil fuels. As a review, I will explain how we obtain solar energy.

Let's discuss more about solar power, we will look at its concepts and benefits, which will give us a better idea.

Components:

Solar Panels:

Solar panels are made up of PV cells. PV stands for Photovoltaic. They capture energy from the sun and convert it into electricity. They convert it to DC. When sunlight hits them, it excites electrons, which creates an electric current.

Inverter:

We get DC electricity from solar panels not used in our homes. AC is used in our homes. The use of an inverter is that it converts DC into AC to deliver it to our homes. Or we can send it back to the grid after converting it into AC.

Battery Storage:

We can also store the solar energy generated throughout the day in a battery so that we can use it in cloudy weather or at night. For this, we can use a battery, which increases self-sufficiency and reduces our dependence on the electricity grid.

Grid Connection:

In solar power systems, we often use green meters. Green meters mean that when your solar panel is generating more electricity than you use, it delivers your excess electricity to the grid station through this green meter. You can also get electricity from these grid stations at night or on cloudy days, thus getting credits on your electricity bill.

Benefits of Solar Power:

  • This is inexhaustible solar energy that is available everywhere and will continue to work as long as there is sunlight. Unlike fossil fuels, it does not run out.
  • Through this we can generate our electricity at home and get rid of or reduce electricity bills. Because over time it can save you money especially if you use a green meter. When your home is generating excess electricity you sell electricity back to the grid.
  • We don't have to do anything special for its maintenance. Once we install it, we have to keep the solar panel clean so that it doesn't block the path of the sun. We also have to make sure that there is no shade over it so that the sunlight doesn't get blocked.
  • It has no harmful effects, it does not cause air pollution, it does not cause water pollution, and it does not have any greenhouse gas emissions. It is simply a clean alternative to coal, natural gas, or oil.
  • Those who generate electricity at home are less dependent on local utility companies because they don't have to worry about power outages or fluctuations in their prices.

Solar Power Factors:

Located:

In solar power work, sunlight will affect how much electricity your solar panel is generating. Areas near the equator receive more sunlight throughout the year.

Initial Cost:

These days, the prices of solar panels have come down considerably, but the initial cost of our installation may be high. However, our government is still trying to make solar energy cheaper by eliminating taxes for us.

Roof Spaces:

To install solar panels in your home, there should be enough space on your roof where you can fit your solar panels and it should be facing in a direction where it can get maximum power from the sun.

Energy Usage:

Before installing it, we need to know the total electricity consumption of our home so that we can install the right size solar panel. To see if this system is meeting your needs or can cover a large portion of your total electricity needs.

Write three important differences between AC solar and DC solar systems.

DifferenceAC SolarDC Solar
Energy Storage & UseAC solar systems are compatible with electrical grids because they do not store energy in batteries, instead relying more on the electrical grid. When the panels are not generating electricity, excess electricity can be sent back to the grid.A DC solar system is not connected to the grid but rather uses its system to store current in a battery. It stores DC for later use so that it can be used in remote areas where there is no grid station or where load shedding is high.
Efficiency & ApplicationAC solar systems are installed for use in grid-connected homes because AC appliances are commonly used in homes. They also take advantage of net metering and are easy to integrate into the existing electrical infrastructure.DC solar systems are not connected to the grid, but instead use batteries for storage. They are especially useful for applications where devices can run on DC without any conversion, including small electronics or specialized applications such as RVs.
System ComplexitySolar panel systems produce DC which is not used in homes and businesses but to use them in homes we need an inverter. The inverter converts our DC into AC then we can use it in homes. In this way, an additional component is added to our system which can make this panel costly.DC solar system is easy to install because it does not require any kind of inverter for battery storage. We can use DC systems for our small-scale off-grid applications. But it produces DC and is not compatible with anything that runs on AC.

Calculate your home's electrical load and share it with us. Follow our lesson as an example.

I will add up the power ratings of all the electrical appliances in my house and then multiply them by their number so that I can estimate the total system in my house. Below is a list of the things I have in my house.

Load Calculation

ComponentsRatingQuantityTotal Power
Lights30 Watts05150 Watts
Fans70 Watts03210 Watts
Freezer200 Watts01200 Watts
Washing Machine500 Watts01500 Watts
Motor Pump750 Watts01750 Watts

Total Load Calculation

ComponentsRating
Lights150 Watts
Fans210 Watts
Freezer200 Watts
Washing Machine500 Watts
Motor Pump750 Watts
Total1810 Watts / 1.810kW

1000Watts = 1KW so, This was the calculation of the entire load of my house and I will install my solar panel based on this calculation so that it can handle my house well and bear its entire load.

Prepare a DC solar project specification for a customer's home to use four 5-watt lamps and three 20-watt fans.

For of all I calculate the total load of these electrical elements, which includes lamps and fans. So here is the calculation.

Load Calculation

ComponentsRatingQuantityTotal Power
Lamps5 Watts0420 Watts
Fans20 Watts0360 Watts

Total Load Calculation

ComponentsRating
Lamps20 Watts
Fans60 Watts
Total80 Watts

For the above load calculation, I bought a DC solar system that bears the load of these electricity components.

Wiring & Accesories

To connect this system in a good and efficient way, we will need a few things. This will include DC wiring, connectors, switches, etc.

Prepare specifications for a customer's AC solar system to drive a water pump motor of 1 HP or 746 W and write the function of each device.

Functions:

Solar Panel: The main function of a solar panel is to capture energy from the sun and convert it into DC electricity.
Inverter: To run the motor pump, we will have to convert DC electricity to AC, so we will use this inverter for that.
Battery: The battery will be used so that the energy stored in it can be used when there is no sunlight or at night.
Charge Controller: The function of the charge controller is to prevent overcharging, improve the flow of electricity in the battery, and keep it under control.
