Cockroach of the sea

I learned something about lobsters that just made me start seeing them in a whole different light. I have always seen them as luxury fish. I for one don't want to eat lobsters and I don't understand why they're being priced that high until I learned their backstory.

They used to be so common and cheap that even prisons used to serve it to inmates. I'll keep this story so when my family gather for the Easter meals and get together this week I'll tell them although I doubt lobster is in the menu.

But I've already told the story to my friend and to him it sounded a bit ridiculous and he said that nowadays if you serve lobster at a function, people will actually think that you have money to spend.

When I was a kid, I thought that all expensive products have always been a smaller market and that's what made them even more expensive. I never thought about things that were once intended as food for feeding domesticated animals. I watched a documentary on YouTube that said lobster was considered a low quality food, so much that in the 1800s workers protested because they were being fed lobster. That is very funny to think about today because nobody complains about having too much caviar.

I remember going to a restaurant with a friend and I had the opportunity to order lobster. The price was the highest in the menu. The rest of the menus were available but we both just looked at the menu and decided to skip it. I have thought about it long enough but I think it is because of the shift in public perception.

I have new perspectives on lots of things now. Seeing a low price on something isn’t a guarantee that it will remain that way. It’s interesting how people’s opinions shift so easily only based on presentation. Wrapping something a certain way will change how people see it. Even with clothing, I have seen plain items get advertised and sold as if they are new items simply because of a brand logo.

Presentation is not the only thing that changed, the style of cooking also changed. I'm sure because it kept becoming a big deal, chefs have found ways to make it more delicious.
