Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #11
Hello friends welcome to my blog
The aim of mating in animals is for continuity. This process involves coming together of both parent's genetics to reproduce younger ones.
Animal mating is of great benefit to the agriculture sector which includes
Higher productivity: when animals reproduce, there is room for the production of eggs, milk and meat, which the farmer can make more profit and productivity, leading the farmer to more sustainability of farming practices.
Economic benefits: when animals mate and have high yields, it gives room for the trade of livestock in both the local and international markets, which gives a good return and boosts the country's economy.
Improved quality of livestock; when animals with improved traits are chosen for mating, they have an improved production like better meat, higher/ large quantity of milk, more eggs, faster offspring growth and resistance to diseases.
Sustainability: healthy breeding enhances the viability of operations on the farm, which is important for the sustainability of agriculture by lowering resource consumption, which is beneficial to the environment.
Monogamous mating is an animal mating type that involves one male with one female for that season of mating. It could be a social or genetic monogamy. Examples of animals that engage in monogamous mating include Swans, birds and fish.
Polygamous mating comprises an animal having multiple mating mates. It could be polygyny in which a male is in charge of a region and mates with multiple females within that area. Or Herem polygyny in which a male assembles a group of females and mates with them. This mating type can also be the other way round, where one female mates with multiple males. An example is Jacanas.
Promiscuous mating: here, the male and female have multiple partners. They mate with or without pair bonds, for example, chimpanzees.
