Farm Mechanisation is the use of engineering technology tools and motorised machinery like harvesters, irrigation system and tractors for farming. It replaces manual labour in agriculture and it is the fastest means of farming a large piece of land.

Farm Mechanisation enhances efficiency across farmland and preparation, planting, harvesting, and post-harvest loss, which in return improve profitability.

What are the Advantages and disadvantages of farm mechanization

Advantages of Farm Mechanisation

  • Farm Mechanisation ensures that farm operations are done and completed within the shortest timeframe
  • Farm Mechanization helps to save human labour that could otherwise be used somewhere else
  • Farm Mechanisation encourages farmers to go into large-scale farming hence increasing output.
  • Farm Mechanisation reduces hazards and accidents that can occur from using tools.

Disadvantages of Farm Mechanisation

  • Farm Mechanisation involves huge capital
  • It causes job loss as few workers would be needed
  • The smoke that comes out from the exhaust of the machine can cause air pollution
  • Frequent usage of the machine on the soil can cause land tenure.

I concur that in land preparation and harvesting over large areas, mechanization has the potential for increasing efficiency and productivity. Yet, its disadvantages, including the necessity of large capital investments and the possibility of losses of jobs, deserve a serious consideration. In my view the best course is a gradual controlled introduction of machinery with training given to the work force to go forward with technology. In this way, modern farming can be allowed to thrive, and still not ignore the social issue.
