Explain in detail the term Fallow? |
|---|
Fallow is a term mainly used in agriculture. It refers to a piece of farmland that is left unplanted and unused for a period of time so that the soil can recover it's fertility and nutrients before crops are planted again. Fallow land is also a land that farmers so not cultivate for one or more growing season.
During this time, the soil rest and naturally restore the nutrients that crops previously used. This practice helps the land regain strength and productivity, I can remember when my parents left a land for 2 years and after the 2 years when we came back to clear up the farm fie planting the soil was very tick weeds grown up in the soil which will add nutrients to the soil when we want to plant.
The reason why farmers leave a land fallow for several important is so the soil restores nutrient, when crops grow, they absorb nutrients like nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium from the soil. Leaving the land fallow allow these nutrients to rebuild naturally. Resting the land also helps soil recognize and improve soil quality.
Also without crop growing, many pests and plant disease lose their food sources and die off. The soil can store more water when it is not comtinulsy used for farming. They are different types of fallow farming which one is, bare fallow this type of fallow the land is left without crops, but farmers may still plough it occasionally to control weeds.
The second one is Natural fallow in which the land is left alone, and natural vegetation grows on it. The last one is rotational fallow which farmers rotate crops and leave some fields fallow while planting others for example, my parents grew maize on a farm in 2023, after harvesting the maize, they have to leave the farm for 1 year and in 2024 January they came and plant cassava and maize in that farm again.
What is the importance of Fallow? |
|---|
Fallow refers to the practice of leaving farmland uncultivated for a period of time so that the soil can naturally recover it's fertility. Farmers allow the land to rest before planting crops again. Importance of fallow is to restore soil fertility so that the plants can grow well again. When land is used continuously for farming, nutrients in the soil becomes exhausted, leaving the land fallow allows the land to rest before planting crops again. It also allows natural processes to restore nutrients making the soil fertile again for future crops.
During the fallow period, organic matter such as leaves and plants remains decomposed and mix with the soil. This improves the soil textures and makes it better for plants growth. It also control weeds, pets and diseases, continuous farming can increase pests and diseases that attack crops. A fallow period breaks the life cycle and reduces their population..
It also conserves soil moisture, when land is cultivated, it can retain water better. This moisture becomes useful when crops are planted again. It also prevents soil erosion, natural grass and plants grow on fallow land , helping to hold the soil together and prevents it from being wasted, so therefore, the pictures of the fallow lands are gotten from @bossj23. I therefore invite @bossj23, @blessed and @peacemike to participate in the contest.
