Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #71

Hello steemians

Today is another wonderful day to explore our agricultural terrain and do some checking up on our crops and other carry out other agricultural activities.

Though I have to ask how do you plant your crops on a cultivated land....Incase you don't know it is being planted rotational...and I'm here to enlighten you on what that means and it benefits as well.

WHAT IS CROP ROTATION

Crop rotation is an agricultural practice where different types of crops are planted in the same field in a planned sequence over several seasons or years, rather than planting the same crop continuously.

But why do we need crop rotation in our farming activity and does it help....well here are the purpose why we should involve in crop rotation.

PURPOSE OF CROP ROTATION

Soil fertility improvement: Different crops have different nutrient requirements. For example, legumes (like beans or peas) fix nitrogen in the soil, enriching it for the next crop.

Pest and disease control: Rotating crops breaks the life cycles of pests and pathogens specific to a crop.

Weed management: Different crops compete differently with weeds, reducing weed pressure over time.

Soil structure maintenance: Root systems of different crops affect soil differently, helping prevent compaction and erosion.

COMMON CROP ROTATION PATTERNS

Legume → Cereal → Root crop: Beans → Maize → Carrot

Two-year rotation: Corn → Soybean → Corn

Four-field rotation: Wheat → Turnips → Barley → Clover

BENEFITS OF CROP ROTATION

IMPROVES SOIL FERTILITY;

Different crops absorb and replenish different nutrients.
Legumes (like beans, peas, or groundnuts) fix nitrogen in the soil, enriching it for the next crop.

CONTROLS PESTS AND DISEASES;

Pests and pathogens often target specific crops.
By rotating crops, their life cycles are interrupted, reducing infestations and infections.

REDUCES WEED GROWTH;

Different crops compete differently with weeds.
Changing crops makes it harder for specific weeds to dominate the field.

PREVENTS SOIL DEGRADATION;

Roots of various crops improve soil structure.
Helps prevent soil erosion and compaction.

INCREASES CROP YIELD;

Healthier soil and reduced pest/disease pressure lead to better productivity over time.

REDUCES DEPENDENCE ON CHEMICALS;

Natural nutrient replenishment and pest control reduce the need for fertilizers and pesticides.

In this you know why crop rotation is supposed to be involved in the planting of our crops and I recommend you use this method when planting to have a sustainable yield in your harvest as well
