Cover crops refer to those crops planted with the intention of protecting the soil, in addition, to ameliorating it instead of harvesting them. Farmers will be the ones to plant them.

One of the highest benefits of cover crops is soil protection. The soil is also prone to erosion and blown away by the wind and rain, especially during the time, when the land is uncovered after harvesting. The blanketing cover which is known as the living cover crop helps in keeping the soil in place and does not result in soil erosion. This helps the farmers to conserve the fertile lands and the wastage of the value added nutrients is minimized.

The fertility of soil is also increased by the cover crops. The common examples of leguminous plants are plants that absorb the nitrogen present in the air and store it in the soil hence reducing the application of chemical fertilizer. In situations where such plants are disintegrated, the nutrients are emitted to feed the next crop. It is a natural process that saves money and promotes environmental friendly farming.

Another good thing is that weeds and pests are controlled. The cover crops are thick and spread out when they grow and this prevents the germination and spreading of the weeds to the soil. There are also cover crops that produce natural chemicals that discourage the harmful weeds and insects. It reduces the use of herbicides and pesticides hence rendering the farms safe to the workers and consumers.

The cover crops also come in handy to improve the soil structure and soil moisture. Their roots make the hard soil lose its ground in order to increase the penetration of water and air circulation. The later crops are thus more suited to pierce deeper in the soil and endure the drought. This is especially critical in places that are experiencing climatic changes and rain that is not predictable.

The cover crops also contribute to the protection of the environment beyond the farm. They reduce the flow of nutrients to rivers and lakes thus, preventing the pollution of water and algae blooms. Healthier soils are also more efficient in the capture of carbon and this has a minor yet significant impact in addressing climate change.

In conclusion, the contemporary agricultural system cannot afford to live without cover crops. They prevent soil erosion, improve the soil, control weeds, save on water and simplify the environment. By planting cover crops which will not only make the farmers make better harvests but they are also making long-term investments in the health of their land. This elementary practice helps to demonstrate the fact that nature will normally do well with nature.
