Word of the Week: Weed
With farming, the term weed is used to refer to any plant that grows where it did not belong. Despite the fact that plants are normally good to the environment, weeds are problematic when they generate among crops and compete with them to either the required resource such as sunlight, water and nutrients among others and space. Thanks to this competition, weeds have the opportunity to reduce the crop growth and bring less harvest to farmers.
The legality of the weeds is too high in the farms, gardens and even in the roadside. Being vigorous and versatile plants, they multiply quicker and spread without any complications. The other weeds increase in number of their seeds, and this may take many years before being germinated. The rest reproduce either by root, stem or underground structures and are thus difficult to do away with completely.
One of the major issues of weeds is that they can have a negative effect on the wellbeing of crops. In every time crops are planted together with the weeds, they compete with each other in the nutrient and water available in the soil that eventually may render the crops weak. There are also some weeds that are homes to pests and diseases, which may attack the cultivated plants in future. This makes the management of the weeds a major aspect of an effective farming.
Farmers have many methods of controlling the weeds. The most common one is the manual weeding where farmers weed either by hand or using crude tools like hoes. This is an effective though time consuming technique, which may prove to be time consuming especially in large farms. The other method is the mechanical control in which machines or equipments are employed to extract the weeds in the soil.
Chemicals also control modern agriculture. Herbicides-special chemicals are used by the farmers and targeted to cause death or inhibit the growth of weeds. However, herbicides are to be applied cautiously to ensure that they do not destroy crops, soil or environment surrounding it.
In addition to this, farmers can also avoid weeds by engaging in good farm management practices. To give an example, the crop rotation, proper future spacing of the plants, mulching and healthy soil can be employed to have a natural reduction of weed growth.
In conclusion, weeds are unwanted plants that can interfere with production of products and reduce the productivity of farms. Weed control is a crucial facet of farming in which the crops can grow effectively and produce high harvests. By combining different control measures and suitable farming practices, the farmers can reduce the impact of the weeds and can guarantee themselves of having healthy agricultural systems.
