Manure is of the oldest, and most important material in agriculture. It is characterized as organic matter or primarily animal waste to increase soil and plant growth productivity. Since time immemorial, farmers have been using manure as a natural alternative to the chemical fertilizers and it has been a major part of the sustainable farming.
Some of the most significant benefits of manure include the fact that it supplies the soil with important nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium. These nutrients are needed in the healthy development of vegetation and they cause crops to be more robust and bountiful. Localized to synthetic fertilizers, manure nutrients are not released directly into the soil, hence they will supply a steady supply of nutrient to the plants over the period of time, and not a burst that can be courtesy of one event.
Other than the fact that manure provides nutrients, it improves the soil structure. It increases the retention capacity of the soil especially during arid seasons or during rainy season. In the meantime, it enhances the aeration of soil thereby making roots breathe and grow better. This leads to agricultural production and crops that are healthy.
The other exceptional advantage of manure is that it promotes proliferation of positive microorganisms in the soil. These microorganisms help in the process of decomposing the organic matter and therefore, this increases the availability of nutrients to the plants. The other advantage of healthy soil ecosystem is the reduction of the risk of plant diseases and guaranteeing the long-term fertility of the soil.
It is however in the correct handling of manure. Otherwise, it can lead to such negative environmental effects as water pollution and unpleasant smell. The farmers are suggested to do the manure composting after which the manure should be applied to the fields. The process of composting leads to the decrease of the pathogens, nutrients stabilization and the manure becomes safer and more effective to use.
In conclusion, manure is an important component of the modern day farming despite the presence of the chemical fertilizers. It is an unvaluable asset to the farmers since it naturally has the ability to improve the health of the soil, the growth of the plants and their survival. By the wise and sustainable use of manure, the future generations will also enjoy fertile soils and food.
