The battle of farming begins with planting a seed, but when other unwelcome seeds are planted in the process, that's where it gets real. From the agriculture principles that I've been learning about this week, I pick weeding. Weeding is defined as identifying and removal of unwanted plants (weeds) from a cultivated farm or garden.

Weeds are typically known as 'silent thieves' of the agriculture industry. They don't damage plants by eating them like other types of crop-harming species but, they do immense harm through direct competition. Weeds intensely compete with our desired crops on key resources needed to grow: sunlight, soil nutrients, water and space. Overgrown weed plants can decrease plant productivity, limit produce yields at more than 50% of their capacity and, carry pest diseases which would have destroyed the entire plant. That's why proper weeding is not merely an optional duty but a prerequisite to crop production.

There are various methods that can be used to eradicate these invasive species. One is by using the conventional hand method, or the mechanical weeding where the unwanted plants are pulled from the ground either by hand or by using simple weeding tools such as hoes. This requires a lot of manpower but is without doubt free from harmful chemicals getting into the soil. Larger farmers would resort to mechanical weeding through tractors and chemical weeding through herbicides. Prevention methods like mulching also helps by coating the soil and suffocating potential weed plants before they sprout.

In my personal opinion, weeding represents an action that enables us to have an efficient and high yield farm. Without these weed-competitive plants using up precious resources, every droplet of water and every bit of fertilizer will solely be devoted to our designated crop that is to be harvested. Thus we achieve greater farm productivity and create a more healthy and productive environment for our plants.

In essence, weeding is one of the more vital and beneficial lessons in farming- protecting your crops is as significant as nourishing them. A proficient farmer isn't merely someone who plants but also someone who diligently prepares the ground for their crops to grow.
