When it comes to agricultural activities harvesting is usually the last stage which is removing what you have planted. It is the most important phase in the agricultural cycle, marking the culmination of months of hard work, dedication, and patience that are put into farming.

Harvesting involves the gathering of mature crops from the farm, such as fruits, grains, vegetables, and other produce, to be processed, stored, or sold. Most farmers sell the majority of what their harvested from their farm and consume a few. The timing of the harvest is important: when a farmer harvests his or her produce too early it can lead to underdeveloped produce, while waiting too long to harvest may result in damage or spoilage.

The process of harvest varies depending on the farming methods and crops. It can be manual, involving labor-intensive activities like picking, cutting, and threshing, or mechanized, using advanced machinery such as combine harvesters, which increase productivity and efficiency.

Proper harvesting techniques are essential in farming to maximise yield quality and prevent losses. A good example is harvesting at the right moisture content, which ensures that crops do not get spoiled. On the other hand, post-harvest handling, including cleaning, drying, and packaging, also plays a vital role in marketability and maintaining freshness.

Harvesting is seen as a celebration of hard work and not just as an economic opportunity for farmers. This is the reason why in most parts of Nigeria people celebrate the yam festival.
