Have you ever cut open an aloe vera leaf before? The gel starts coming out almost immediately

I have three aloe vera plants growing at the backyard of our house. One of them got knocked off last April and broke off at the base. I thought it would be dead but it’s still alive.

People have been using aloe vera for thousands of years. People have used it for burns, skin problems and wounds. Aloe vera has been used throughout history on every continent and in every culture. The reason it has persisted is not because of advertising or popularity. It has been there for so long because it works. Time and time again. I could even say it's very stubborn at working.

It is really just so humbling for me to watch a plant without a brain, a nervous system or an understanding of whether it will live or die, doing exactly what it needs to do to survive automatically and in a way that is accurate enough for it to actually survive. I may not call these evidence of evolution but it looks close to that for me. Perhaps it created this as an adaptational feature to survive.

Human beings have built thousands of systems, hospitals, pharmaceuticals, and research facilities to figure out how to treat wounds and I'm looking at one little succulent leave sitting in a terracotta pot knowing just how to do it all on its own.
