Pruning corn leaves just reduces harvest, your good intentions can become bad for the plant

There is a common misconception that more involvement or interaction will yield more positive results. The opposite of involvement is disengagement, with the intention being that something that is not being taken care of is also being ignored or neglected.

I learned about this misconception when I was working with a farmer who has a plot of land a little outside of Accra where he grows corn on about half of an acre of land. Every year without fail, there is always at least one person walking through this plot of land who has good intentions but has no idea what they are doing and they begin to cut off the leaves that are still attached to the corn stalks. They are cleaning up the corn stalks and making the plot of land look like it is being properly cared for and cultivated.

Corn leaves are not just an aesthetic part of the corn plant and they all have a function. The process through which corn produces food or energy for itself which you already know as photosynthesis does not happen by itself, it relies on the leaves of the corn plant to work. As the corn plant produces food for itself it also creates the opportunity for the leaves to create the energy that is required to help support the creation of new corn.

I have become so sad about a problem people have which won't help in development. The way some people have the ability to be so confidently incorrect when it comes to how to do things. Doing this to plant like that is wrong.

When you cut of the leaves from the corn stalks, the corn stalks begin to produce corn of a smaller size than if the leaves had not been cut off. This will mean a smaller amount of corn is what will be harvested.

There are ways to hurt a plant that will not happen because of any reason other than the very same care that is being provided for the plant. The corn plant was able to produce properly before you arrived at the plot of land and you did not give any form of valuable service to the corn plant by doing that. In certain instances the most valuable type of service can come from allowing a plant to do the things that it has been naturally created to be able to do.
