Which one, organic or chemical farming?
You have the locals that call it growing plants, but it's really called organic farming. My uncle has two farms he works on, a smaller one that he owns and the bigger one is for a rich man that knows a good manager when he sees one so has employed my uncle to handle it for him.
For the small farm, he can't afford to use chemicals, so the last time I was there, I noticed the dirt underneath the neem trees was darker in color than the farm's soil from where the tractor had travelled across the field. There's much debate about how commercial chemical fertilizers and pesticides help the corn stalks to grow tall and fast, but the taste doesn't compare to locally grown corn. When I recently ate a chicken which I already knew was raised on grass and insects in the small farm, it had a tougher skin and the soup made from its bones was very sweet.
It's the same with crops for the most part. Land treated with commercial fertilizer for three years becomes hard and requires fertilizing again, and it creates a never ending cycle of needing more and more fertilizer. Have you noticed that the price of a 50 kg bag of NPK is higher but there's no price increase in the cow dung.
I didn't get to look at the label of the last one I was sent to go and buy. What if using natural methods is better for the long run because they keep the ground soft?
The bugs can also be a serious problem that's just difficult to keep up with handling it. The caterpillars can destroy an entire crop of cabbage within a couple of days. It's frustrating to anyone that had already calculated their yield before harvest season.
I was also told that organic foods prevent illness, if that's true maybe, then the goats are better off eating grass that has no chemicals in it.
The transition will not be easy for you. You have used chemical fertilizer for so long and to suddenly stop using something that works because of my little advice may not seem realistic to you.
