Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #59
Hi friends, I'm happy to participate in this contest because it directly concerns me. Let me explain better. I've been practicing backyard gardening for some time now. I actually didn't even know what it was, but lately I've noticed, at least in Italy, that it's becoming increasingly popular precisely because in recent years, due to inflation, the cost of fruit and vegetables has skyrocketed.
So many people have reclaimed outdoor spaces from their homes, such as a simple courtyard, a balcony, a terrace, or even a part of the garden that was previously used only for ornamental plants, vegetables, and even some fruit.
That's basically what I did too, in the backyard of my parents' house which is partly cemented. I created some tubs which I filled with soil and basically I try to grow some vegetables both in the summer and in the winter, obviously for personal use and not for commercial purposes.
Actually, talking to people and even relatives, this trend is becoming very popular because it also offers an opportunity to get back in touch with the land and also produce food in a more sustainable way.
It's certainly a practice that can be done by those who have little time to take care of the cultivation, but still want to have healthier products that are perhaps also free from pesticides, and above all, I say this personally, it also gives you the opportunity to observe the natural cycles of the plants, which is always an opportunity to also acquire culture.
As you can see from the photos, since it's winter, I still managed to grow something with great happiness. This year, for the first time, I'll be eating some delicious fennel and also some good carrots, which are one of my favorite vegetables.
So in the end this thing about backyard gardening is very interesting because it increases food security, you depend less on the market and therefore on the variable prices of vegetables, it reduces family spending, it promotes a healthy lifestyle because there is no point in hiding it. But the things grown personally are richer in nutrients and there are fewer pesticides and it contributes to environmental sustainability because you have to think about that there is less transport of food, less plastic, less waste but above all as a last point always very important. It is educational for those who have children because it makes them understand how nature works, respect for food and also the patience to wait for everything to ripen.
Thank you for reading. I hope my post was interesting.
