Animal Activities #72
Early on a Saturday morning, a woman woke up to hear her husband calling her to tell her that there is a puppy across the street which seems lost and runs away whenever he tries to catch it. He knows to call her because any animal trusts her immediately because of the way she is with them. Even a skunk ran to her as if it were a happy puppy. That's how good she was.
The woman took the puppy from across the street. It looked like a really old Yorkie, weighing about three pounds, tired and weak. It had no fur on its paws and ears. There was no collar on its neck, so she could not tell if there was anyone who owned this poor animal or if he was just badly treated and lost his way somewhere. She took him to the vet to see if anything was wrong with him.
The vet said that most likely it belonged to somebody because its nails were cut and it was neither underfed nor too skinny. He said that that it was just very old. Then she made signs with its photo asking if anyone was looking for their dog. Weeks and weeks went by, yet nobody called.
This puppy was very dirty and smelly. It had a few rotten teeth left and used the house often for pee and pooping. She ordered a homemade diaper online. She also had a small Maltese dog which did not want to have anything to do with this new one, probably due to the smell. This tiny old dog quickly grew fond of her. He took another doggy bed and acted like he was born there.
She thought that she should name him so she does have to call hey buddy just to call the dog.
So she decided to name him Peanut and mash his dry dog food since he could hardly chew it. Each day she washed his face and treated this dear old thing with honor and respect. Her husband was annoyed sometimes, but he knew that she was that kind of person and that she would never throw out an old dog, let alone one of this age.
After some months she contacted the Yorkie rescue center. These nice people promised to take good care of this little one, foster him and try to find him a family, but she started crying and asked her husband to keep him because she liked it too much to let it go, so they kept this old dear.
Two months later a lady named Kathy called. She said that she had seen a small lost Yorkie sign near her in the vet office, where no picture was shown. She described what she had seen and immediately understood that it was her old mother dog named Waldo. He was 19 years old, blind and had escaped after being let outside to pee. Of course, his owner did search for him, but he did not see any notices. He walked many miles and days without being hurt either by traffic or by other animals.
He lived six miles from their place. He had a busy job and Kathy is his daughter who is a flight attendant. She was out of town on this particular weekend, returning home at her birthday party. She decided to give her a nice surprise. When she opened the door to enter her flat, she was greeted with her old dog, Waldo. A week later she personally thanked her.
Waldo died at the age of 21. He was a tough character and lived on love.
