Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #79
On my farm irrigation helps to reduce the risks of crop failure in my farm during drought as it is a backup plan for my crops during dry season. I planted cucumbers and tomatoes in my backyard, what I observed was that during dry season when there was no sufficient rainfall my crops started wilting until I needed to start applying water regularly for more productivity.
Agriculture is one of the most important activities that I believe can help improve human life and it can play a significant role in crop production too. In this post , I will be discussing irrigation as well as its importance in the agricultural sector.
Irrigation simply means an artificial way of applying water to the soil for the purpose of helping or assisting crops to grow. This means it's a system that is used when crops are not supplied with enough water naturally by rainfall. On my farm, I noticed that during dry periods my crops don’t survive without extra watering. This made me understand irrigation as simply supplying water to crops when rainfall is not enough or when there is a low rainfall as irrigation can help to increase an add adequate moisture to the plant and at the right time and at the right quantity during dry season.
From what I observed, Irrigation is so important in agriculture for several reasons;
On my farm, I noticed that it keeps a consistent growth in my crops as they require a steady water supply for proper growth even when there is a low rainfall or irregular rainfall.
This is why I see irrigation as important to increase my agricultural productivity. With a reliable water supply, i can grow crops throughout the year as such leading to a higher yield. In my unproductive land during dry season I used irrigation systems to make cultivation of such land to become productive. I want to openly say that irrigation improve my soil fertility. Irrigation increases my soil in the distribution of adequate nutrients allowing my crops to absorb more effectively.
That is why I see irrigation as a vital agricultural practise to support more food production and help myself as a farmer to overcome challenges related to water scarcity. My understanding of its importance has help me as a farmer to make more better decisions and improve my farming activities.
