As we humans continue to progress, our scientific knowledge advances in tandem; and in this very process, we have developed pathology—that is, diagnostic technology—across every field.

Indeed, a few decades ago, Hakims, Vaids, and pulse diagnosticians used to treat patients solely based on their reported symptoms and pulse examination; however, this method did not allow them to reach the root cause of the actual ailment.

Subsequently, over time, numerous diseases emerged that could not be effectively treated based on symptoms alone. Consequently, for the treatment of both humans and animals, it became necessary to identify the actual disease by analyzing samples of blood, urine, stool, sputum, etc. This enabled medical practitioners to administer the correct medication—tailored to the specific ailment—thereby eradicating the disease from its very roots. These diagnostic procedures came to be known as pathological tests or diagnostic systems.

In a similar , as a result of ever-expanding research within the agricultural sector, a parallel process has begun involving the identification of new plant diseases and the development of methods to diagnose them.

In agriculture, Plant Pathology constitutes the pathological study of plant diseases caused by various pathogens—such as fungi, bacteria, viruses, and nematodes—as well as by environmental factors. Its primary objective is to identify, manage, and prevent diseases in order to minimize crop losses, ensure food security, and facilitate the development of advanced and high-yielding crop varieties through diagnostic techniques and management strategies.

Through pathological techniques, we work towards enhancing the resistance of susceptible crops—rendering them immune to emerging diseases—by employing methods such as breeding and genetic modification.

Through these efforts, we are making significant strides toward preventing substantial losses in agricultural yields and ensuring the quality of food crops. Furthermore—and of particular importance—these diagnostic tests are enabling us to take concrete steps toward reducing our reliance on chemical pesticides.

In many nations, as governments increasingly prioritize the modernization of agriculture, they are focusing on establishing dedicated departments specifically for this purpose. Mobile agricultural pathology laboratories are also being established, which will travel across rural areas to conduct examinations of the local soil and vegetation.
