Basic Knowledge in Agriculture #64

Before I start this write-up, permit me to start with a question; why do men and some women have a haircut on a scheduled period? The answer is not far-fetched as it serves as a hair care while maintaining the beauty. With this fact, let's bring it to pruning. Let's get to understand the basic things about pruning.
What is Pruning? |
|---|
Pruning is an agricultural process where the branches, roots or buds which are either diseased or dead are cut off. In a layman's understanding, we can call the haircut of a plant. Let's imagine someone planted an ornamental plant in his house. The plant grew well but one of the branches appears dead. As what any human being will do, he will take a Cutlass and bring down that dead branch. This act can literally save the life of that plant preserving it.
Types of Pruning |
|---|
In this segment, I'd love to mention the types of pruning based on the physical action of pruning.
- Thinning Cut: In this type of pruning, an entire branch is cut off till it reaches its point of origin. Its point of origin night is the stem to which this branch originated from. The sole purpose of this pruning type is that it exposes the plant to more light and air.
- Pinching: This is when a farmer cuts out the tip of a new green shoot with his fingers. This method might sound bizarre but it serves a purpose. The purpose is to stop long growth rather it helps the plant to grow side branches. This is how a herb is being formed instead of a tree.
- Shearing: The action done here is that long bladed shears are used to prune without a specific bud or branch. The purpose here is mostly for aesthetics and helps create a thick shell of foliage in the plant.
The Benefits of Pruning |
|---|
- Stop Disease spread: By cutting off a branch which was diseased, other parts of the plant will remain safe. That's why pruning is important.
- Boost growth in plants: Did you know that by pruning, the plants become more motivated to grow. This is because the plant wants to regain its lost part easily.
- Aesthetics Purpose: Pruning ornamental plants create a shape which is pleasing to the eyes.
