PROCRASTINATION: DO YOU PUT IT YOU OFF TILL LATER?

You would likely look at at the topic above and say, "Nice topic, I'll read it later." Don't! You know want would happen if you do? Chances are that you will not read it later. Ironically, you would be procrastinating reading and article about procrastination. funny right? why don't you time yourself, you'll be done in about 6 minutes or less.

What is Procrastination.
Procrastination has been defined as the act of delaying or deferring an action to a later time. If you put off what you could or should do now, then you procrastinate. In other words, if you put off for tommorow what you can do now, today, you're procrastinating.
Procrastination has been described as "the thief of time". A procrastinator delays action when it is action that is needed.

A teacher asks a student for his assignment. An employee delays on a report. A chore is not done. The usual responses are, "I was too busy", "I forgot " or " I didn't have time". The reality is, few of us like to do reports or do assignments or do chores when there are more enjoyable things to do. So we delay doing it, putting it off.

If we can and should take action now, and delaying needed action could cause more problems later, delaying is PROCRASTINATION. For example having an idea for an article and delaying in putting in down in writing can lead to forgetfulness. washing dishes after they have sat for sometime makes it harder to scrub. postponing carrying out maintenance on a car, generator or building can result in costly repairs later.

ARE THERE CONSEQUENCES?
Putting off or postponing what ought to have Been done now would only pile up pressure on you, making you feel anxiety. As these feelings build, your creativity may be affected.

let's see an example: You have an exam due in 3weeks. However you keep delaying study and Preparation till a day before. Now you are under pressure, you sit down to read and prepare but nothing is sticking. in the end, you flop your exams, you perform badly. Perhaps if you had studied way ahead, you could have gotten more time to understand and ace the exam.

Another consequence that comes from procrastinating is the inability to relax when we have free time. why? because we have a nagging feeling that we something undone waiting for us.

WHAT CAN YOU DO?

  1. Make a list.
Take a few minutes to prepare a list of your activities for the day. Put less enjoyable tasks before enjoyable ones.
  2. Tell Time.
If you are always running late, as in, literally running because You're late, learn to tell time. That is, Make an assessment of how long you'll need to do a task. Always allow time in between tasks and appointment.
  3. Delegate.
We do not always have to do everything ourselves. Delegate certain tasks.
  4. Breakdown big Tasks.
Sometimes we don't start a new project/task because of its size. Why don't you slice the larger tasks into smaller ones?. As we complete the smaller tasks, we will see progress and be encouraged to continue.
  5. Plan for Interruptions.
Allow room for unplanned developments. when these arises, you can take care of it, knowing that you allowed some time for it.
  6. Reward.
Take short breaks. If you work in an office, pause, stretch, and reflect. if you work out doors get some refreshment. Reward yourself for your work.
