The apple is a pome, a spherical, firm, delicious fruit with a cartilaginous, seeded core that is encased in a thin, tough, edible skin. Dark green, yellow, vivid red, or any combination of these colors can be found in the apple's skin. Just-ripe apples are juicy and crisp, whereas overripe apples develop an aromatic flavor and a little mealy texture.
