Fishing is a major preoccupation for dwellers of the riverine communities in the Niger Delta. The fisherfolks are mostly into it for financial gains and only a small percentage of the fisherfolks population are subsistence fishermen.

The dwellings are typically of the African village hut types but the most prominent features in such fishing communities are smoking huts like the one displayed in the title page photograph. Another prominent feature is presence or nearness to an aquatic environment rich in edible aquatic species.

The harvest after brought in from the shore are sorted out into three categories. Those that will be eaten by the fisherfolks and their families are set to oneside, those that will be sold immediately fresh are sorted out to another side while the excess with no immediate use are sent to the smoking huts.
