Film review of "The Newspaper Reader": finding a spiritual home and creating new fond memories

in LifeStyle4 years ago

Without seeing the film's introduction, previews and only under the title, I thought this drama was a literary and lyrical film! I do not know, when watching completely subverted imagination, the plot is tense and exciting climax. Tom Hanks Tom Hanks has been ears of the age of a few cold sweat, but also for his bravado applauded. The story is based on the novel of the same name "News of the World" by Paulette Jiles, published in 2016, and is set five years after the end of the American Civil War, describing the wonderful and moving relationship between a veteran and an orphan girl. Jefferson Kyle Kidd (Tom Hanks) travels around the towns of North Texas as a newspaper reader, earning a meager salary.
One day, in the woods, he meets Johanna (Helena Zengel), a single girl who has been captured by Indians and has to go to her aunt hundreds of miles away. It was only with great difficulty that Johanna was delivered to her relatives' home. Tom Hanks Tom Hanks delicately portrayed the loneliness of the bereaved old man, the veteran of the vicissitudes of the kindness of the heart, like a standing mountain to protect the girl Johanna.
German young actress Helena Zengel as 10-year-old girl Johanna, precocious face seems a bit overage, acting skills are pure and sophisticated, have watched her starring in "Lori Wrecking Crew", impressed. Captain Kidd works at night and the townspeople have to pay 10 cents in Dime to listen to the US state and world news. The newspaper reader does not just read the news, he needs to tell the news as a story in order to attract people, this role is similar to the nature of the storyteller to teach and entertain.
Newspaper content is all-embracing, so you can choose news about politics, economy, transportation construction, climate, medical care and other news that are close to your life, or you can select social anecdotes that are highly entertaining, such as celebrity anecdotes and vernacular talk. In addition to adding a rich tone of expression, you also have to watch the townspeople's reaction to adjust the choice of news, to make sure that the night is full of surprise worth the price of admission. The use of language and words properly can produce magic to influence the crowd.
Captain Kidd was in the 3rd Texas Infantry of the Confederate Army during the Civil War and hated war and longed for peace. One night, Captain Kidd read from a newspaper about the 13th-15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which abolished slavery and gave the right to vote, causing an uproar among many listeners (Texas was the deep south where blacks were enslaved).
On another night, when he is forcefully asked to read the merits of the dictatorial mayor, he cleverly substitutes a news story about a miner who was killed but emerged as a survivor, not only encouraging the crowd to fight and find a chance to escape, but also moving a young man to help him and Johanna out of trouble. As Johanna has been raised by the Kiowa Indian tribe for six years, she does not speak English and is very defensive, and Captain Kidd feels anxious because he cannot communicate with her. With no experience in caring for girls, Captain Kidd felt that he was not up to the task and rejected this thankless task.
However, it can only be said that the power of fate is sometimes irresistible, and Johanna, with her wild aboriginal nature, was twice turned away by people who wanted to care for or raise her. The first time Johanna is rejected for running away, Captain Kidd improves the carriage to take her on the road, the old and the young develop revolutionary feelings after many dangers, and the originally estranged relationship becomes closer and closer. The second time Johanna does not work and runs away, she is tied with a rope by her aunt's father, and Captain Kidd adopts her without a second thought. The two encounters with this tribe in the play are dreamlike and have a mysterious aboriginal atmosphere.
Once on a stormy night, Johanna is on the edge of a coastal cliff, calling out to her migrating people, asking them not to abandon her. Another encounter with a land tornado, Captain Kidd originally thought Johanna was in a critical condition, but saw her ask the Kiowa for a horse and calmly watched them leave (simply a miracle), at this time Johanna has accepted Captain Kidd, inwardly waved goodbye to the Indian tribe. The journey from Texas in the south central United States to Castroville, California, where Johanna's aunt lived in the west, was a long way of about 400 miles. The vast expanse of the western United States is covered with yellow soil, shrubs and grasslands with greenery, and cattle and horses running or roaming in a spectacular manner.
Although the scenery is magnificent and majestic, the process of driving Johanna by Captain Kidd is very dangerous, with human accidents and unpredictable accidents, and lives are repeatedly threatened. They encountered a group of villains in Dallas, Dallas. The war bred a group of monsters that became scum to thrive after the war. The three Civil War veterans of the Confederate Army realize that the weak are the strong, and the poor are always sacrificing for the rich, and in the end the poor are still poor, they have no moral values, and make up their minds to get the young girl Johanna. The two sides chase and shootout is very intense, 90 percent chance of certain death and injury of the old and young duo, but finally won the three desperadoes.
When they arrive in Erath County, they encounter a group of displaced soldiers who want to build a new world based on the land as king (the scene of cattle lying on their backs and being skinned is super scary), and Captain Kidd, who is held hostage by softness, is able to escape with his wits and the help of a good man. Johanna's help at the critical moment turned out to be a blessing (Johanna is a miracle).
The white settlers killed the Indians to take the land, and the Indians plundered and killed the settlers' families, Johanna's family was killed and she became an orphan girl and was kidnapped. Fortunately, she meets Captain Kidd, and Johanna escapes her fate. Thinking that leaving Johanna with her aunt and uncle was the right thing to do, after completing his mission, Captain Kidd finally returned to his hometown of San Antonio (South Central Texas) after five years of evasion, and went to his wife's grave to say a sincere goodbye to her.
At this moment, Captain Kidd suddenly misses Johanna and immediately drives his horse to Castroville, where Johanna's feet are tied with ropes and she sits helplessly on the ground. He realized that Johanna was already his family and took her away with him. From then on, the two of them work together as newspaper readers, and the sky is my home. One was involved in three wars and later lost his printing press and wife; the other had his family killed, was taken by Indians, spoke only Aboriginal language and a little German (Johanna's family was German immigrants), and was twice orphaned.
Captain Kidd and Johanna find a place to live and make new memories together.
