RE: Free Art Frees Art at the SUNY Oswego Campus—March 6, 2026

Oh I’m full in on Steemit, Blurt and Ecency as excellent (someday lucrative) social media platforms. The people here are more engaging than the pinkie lifters at a billionaire’s tea party (Facebook and Instagram). I give away art because it has been impossible for me to put a price on something that nobody knows they need. If they’ll take my work for free, and tell me they’ll show it, then it’s a win for both parties. Last week @jompiy, as the Camden Market Free Art Man, watched 50 people queue up across the street. He thinks they might have been standing in line for orange juice. Not a single person was curious enough to break out to find out. That’s a new expression in the human genome. I think artists are capable of curing some of the psycho-cultural auto-immune diseases that flourish today. Someone or something should since religion begrudgingly loosened its grip on mobile populations. Either way, advertism brings people back, and we re-connect. I get more from art if it’s wanted. There is the obsession of making it, of course, but the thrill of a stranger liking it enough to hang it in a room for more people to see, is a touch of communion that an endless supply of orange juice in the fridge could never match.
I trust that more than half the people I connected with last Friday will tell our story with a single painting better than it could while stacked in a box for posterity. I simply have too much work to leave that burden on my children to feel guilty about when I’m deceased.
Now, if there is a person out there wanting to buy a Throop painting(s) to free me for travel to feed my enthusiasm and curiosity, then I’m all in for business:)

Sort:

Yes … every now and then I sell a small 8 x 10 oil painting for $1,000 …. Then I have to pay 50% income Tax

No thanks

So yes it is better to give it away … earn a little crypto to help my kids buy a house or some land on Lake Superior or Lake Huron

Update : I have joined the Free Art Frees Art Movement here on Steemit.

The last time I sold a painting of that size to someone was never, and only in my dreams:)
Either way, I wouldn’t give the mafia government a cut of my creative output under any circumstances. They can tax my dull, brute force labor, but never my art. Likewise, nary a chance to catch me if I give it all away!
