I have the same issues and by now I use the paper and canvas for soft pastels.
I recently read to soak the paper in water first, next let it dry and after that you use it like you used to. The book is from 1988 so it can be that the types of paper changed but it is worth the try.
You're right, I've heard similar things too. I'll give it a try; I've got nothing to lose.
Let me know how it works out. In the nearest future I try it out myself too.
