The May Contest #2 by sduttaskitchen: Society Requires Security!
Security is one of the highest demands of all people and all societies. I believe security is defined as living without fear, danger, oppression or uncertainty. It means that people can easily fall into sleep at night, walk around in the daytime, and be confident that their lives and property are safe. Even if there are beautiful buildings, advanced technology and a strong economy, people suffer when there is a lack of security for society. This is because peace and safety form the basis of a good and meaningful life.
Everybody thinks about security when they think about police officers, soldiers, weapons, security gadgets etc. Although these are important, security is more than just physical security. Social security is also important because it is concerned with the welfare of the citizens in society. Social security should encompass arrangements for the protection of children, respect for women, support for the elderly, job creation and justice and equality for all. It is impossible to build a civil society that can truly develop if a large number of its population is neglected or treated unfairly.
Uncertainty is a serious issue in many parts of the world today. Kidnapping, terrorism, robbery, cybercrime, corruption, domestic violence and discrimination are cases that are reported. Children are sometimes afraid to go to school because of violence and bullying. It is common for women to be harassed or abused in the workplace, at school and even in the home. There are youth who are without jobs and have lost hope and frustrated. This situation sometimes compelled some people to engage in crimes. All these problems clearly indicate that there is inadequate security in the society.
In my opinion, good character and morals are the basis of security. If from childhood we develop the habit of honesty, respect, kindness and discipline then the society will be more peaceful. In teaching children to behave well, parents have a very important role! Responsible citizenship is also being developed in the school, church and community. In my neighborhood some years ago I experienced this. A little boy was caught stealing at a shop. After hearing more information about the boy's life, one initially thinks of the government and the economy, but after considering the matter, I realized that the boy was not given proper care, guidance, and discipline while growing up. This was a lesson to me that family values and proper upbringing is very significant in developing a secure society.
Other than moral training, education is another important aspect that can help in improving security in a society. Education nurtures the rational thinking and decision making of people. A well-educated person has a better understanding of the value of peace, unity and respect for others. The education provides opportunities to people for employment and self development. High crime rates can occur when there are many young people who have no work to perform. If a large number of youths are unemployed and idle, the crime rate may escalate. Hence, governments should invest more in programs of quality education and skill development. I highly believe that if the youths have the knowledge and opportunities, the society will be safer.
Equality and justice also play a role in forming a civilized and secure society. Individuals shouldn't be judged on their tribal affiliation, religion, gender or financial ability. Everybody should be treated fairly and equally. Corruption and favoritism in many societies lead to reduced security due to lack of trust in leaders and institutions. The absence of justice can lead to greater anger and violence. Leaders are, therefore, responsible to be honest, transparent and accountable to those they lead. Leadership, good or bad, can either provide peace or tear down national unity.
Technology also has its contribution to make in enhancing security. Many countries today are utilizing security cameras, biometric systems, digital monitoring devices and online systems to help curb crime. Additionally, cybersecurity is quite important these days, as a lot of crimes take place online. Without adequate security, hackers could break into personal information, bank accounts, and businesses. Security systems have become quicker and more efficient with technology, but technology isn't the answer to all problems. The need for human compassion, cooperation and responsibility is still very much required.
Financial security is another crucial area of security. Poverty, lack of food and shelter are a reality for many families every day. When someone is unable to meet basic needs, he may feel hopeless and frustrated. Government and/or organizations should establish programs to help vulnerable members of society. Improving stability and decreasing suffering can be done through creating jobs, providing healthcare services and having affordable housing. People who feel cared for tend to be more peaceful and united in a society.
Also, there should be unity among citizens to ensure social security. Individuals should know how to live in harmony with one another regardless of culture, language or religion. Hate speech, tribalism and discrimination just breed division and conflict. The community should promote love, tolerance and understanding between human beings. In a society where people view each other as brothers and sisters instead of enemies, I feel like it is stronger and safer.
Finally, security has been one of the most crucial aspects of a successful society. It is not just about saving lives, it's also about protecting property, emotional, social, financial and moral wellbeing. Justice, education, good leadership, unity and good morals are the foundations of a secure society. Peace and safety can be made by everyone, including parents, leaders, teachers, religious communities and ordinary citizens. I feel I have a firm faith in the world becoming a better, safer place for the future generations if people work together sincerely and responsibly.
I invite @sduttaskitchen, @meraindia and @piya3 @sampabiswas to drop a very constructive comments on this post and also to participate in this contest.
