We often witness, quite clearly, the profoundly negative impact that bad company can have on an individual. For years, we have heard the adage: "As is the company, so is the character." That is precisely why it is said that one should always choose one's companions wisely. The proverb—"A melon takes on the color of the melon next to it"—proves absolutely true when applied to the influence of company.

Therefore, parents must always pay close attention to the company their children keep—specifically, whom they talk to and the kind of people they befriend—for it is this very company that shapes a child's future. No matter how excellent a family environment may be, good company does not influence people as swiftly as bad company attracts them. People tend to learn good things slowly, but they pick up bad habits very quickly.

Consequently, parents must always ensure that their children associate only with children who keep good company. One must maintain a keen and watchful eye on one's children's activities and manner of speaking. For if a child falls under the influence of bad company, changes in their body language and speech patterns will become immediately apparent to you. While strictness is certainly necessary in such situations, it is even more important to make an effort to truly understand the children.

It is essential to approach the matter from both a social and a personal perspective. Since children are young, it is the duty of parents to guide and educate them; however, explaining something just once is rarely sufficient. You will need to reiterate these lessons to your children time and again. Rather than acting solely as a parent, you must engage with them as a friend—only then will they truly grasp the message. You must persist in your efforts, for a child's future is determined by the combined influence of both their home environment and the world outside the home.

Furthermore, parents must neither pull the reins too tightly nor let them go too loose. Children are akin to wet clay; they require the right guidance to be molded into the correct shape and fitted into the proper framework. Only parents can accomplish this task.

I always tell my own children: "We can offer guidance, but we cannot become your shadows." We continue to guide them, sharing stories and anecdotes drawn from the real world and society to help them understand. Why? Because by listening to stories from society, they gain maturity and learn which mistakes to avoid—for it is precisely through the errors of others that an individual learns.
