The May contest #2 by sduttaskitchen: Society requires Security!
What is the definition of security according to your perspective?
For me security is not measured by harder walls or more elaborate keys, rather a continuously defensible condition in which no single system, person or community is under any threat of being hurt or interfered with. True security is found at the point where safety and trust meet, it is not a goal to reach but a process of discovering vulnerabilities, negotiating threats and developing strategies for an existence that will support advancement as the foundation of itself is sturdy.
In addition to prioritising technical security measures, it is essential for us also to address the aspect of social security. I welcome your insights on this matter.
Whereas security, as it has long been known by firewalls, data encryption, access control, etc., protects the physical and digital integrity of things and objects in our society; it is social security that protects the people making up that society. We cannot create a stable, civil society without the system of social security helping to preserve the individual at the base level.
When people have their basic need for health, work, food, and education threatened to the point of no return then it becomes naturally unstable and conflict. Technical defenses fail, so it is up to social security, not as welfare but as a necessity, to ensure the stability from below that permits security above all. It becomes easier to prevent threats by first eliminating potential sources of them in the individual rather than in the object.
To establish civilised society, what's are the key principles that should be implemented?
To form a civil society, a society is required to construct it around certain necessary values and ideals:
Rule of Law: Any given law is applied equally to all individuals. This protects everyone from those with more power and removes favoritism from decisions.
Empathy and Human Dignity: A civil society can be said to have "made it" when it comes to protecting its most vulnerable members and respecting all individuals for their inherent value and dignity.
Equity and Opportunity: everyone, no matter their circumstances, is given access to education, health care, and the opportunity for economic advancement. This allows everyone to rise on the merits of their abilities.
Civic Engagement and Open Dialogue: Individuals in society are able to contribute by having freedom of speech and the right to discuss ideas in a peaceable manner that will benefit society.
