Child Marriage – A Steal From Innocence

Child marriage is one of the most heartbreaking realities that still exists in many parts of the world today. It may seem like an outdated tradition or something that only happens far away, but it is more common than many of us think. Every time a child is forced into marriage, a life is altered—dreams are broken, education is disrupted, and the cycle of poverty and dependence continues.

As a member of a global community, I believe it’s our responsibility to talk about this issue. Not just talk, but act. Today, I’ll be sharing my thoughts on early-age marriages, the role of parents, the dangerous link with child trafficking, and the power of education to change this narrative.

Do I Support Early-Age Marriages? Absolutely Not.

To be clear, I strongly do not support child marriage or early-age marriages. In my opinion, no child—regardless of gender—should be burdened with the responsibilities of married life when they are still figuring out who they are. Childhood is meant for learning, playing, and growing—not for raising children or being tied to someone for life.

Many people try to justify child marriages with culture, religion, or financial reasons, but none of these should be accepted as excuses. Forcing a young girl or boy into marriage robs them of their right to education, self-discovery, and emotional development. Worse, it often exposes them to sexual abuse, domestic violence, and health complications.

Children should not be brides or grooms. They should be students, dreamers, future leaders.

What Should Parents Consider Before Thinking About Marriage for Their Child?

Parents hold a critical role in shaping the lives of their children. Sadly, in many communities, parents themselves are the ones pushing their children into early marriages—sometimes unknowingly.

Here are some key points every parent should deeply reflect on:

  1. The Child's Physical and Mental Maturity: Marriage comes with emotional, sexual, and domestic responsibilities. A child’s body and mind are not yet developed to handle such duties. This can lead to physical health problems and long-term emotional trauma.
  1. Educational Goals: Has the child completed basic education? Do they have a dream they want to pursue? Marriage should not be the end goal of a girl’s or boy’s life.
  1. Informed Consent: Does the child even understand what marriage entails? Do they have a say? Consent should be given freely and fully understood—not influenced by pressure or lack of options.
  1. Long-Term Impact: What future is the parent creating for their child? Marrying off a child for financial relief may offer short-term benefits, but often results in long-term suffering.
  1. Legal and Human Rights: Many countries have laws against child marriage, but these are not always enforced. Parents need to understand that forcing a child into marriage is not only morally wrong but often illegal.

Child Marriage and Child Trafficking: A Dark Connection

It’s tragic, but true: child marriage often opens the door to child trafficking. In some cases, girls are sold under the pretense of marriage, only to be used as domestic slaves, forced into labor, or even trafficked into sex work. These are not just isolated stories—they happen more often than we care to admit.

Poverty, lack of education, and weak legal systems fuel both child marriage and trafficking. The more vulnerable a child is, the easier it is for traffickers to exploit them.

To combat this, we need:

Stricter enforcement of laws related to both child marriage and trafficking.

Community awareness programs that educate parents and local leaders about the dangers.

Safe spaces and reporting systems where children can seek help without fear.

Can Education Help? Without a Doubt!

Education is perhaps the most powerful weapon we have in the fight against child marriage and trafficking. It’s more than just learning how to read and write—it’s about empowering children with knowledge, confidence, and life skills.

Here’s how education makes a difference:

  1. Delays Marriage: Studies show that girls who are in school are significantly less likely to be married off early. They and their families start to see alternative paths to success.

  2. Builds Awareness: An educated child is more likely to recognize abuse and seek help. They’re more likely to know their rights and how to stand up for themselves.

  3. Boosts Economic Power: Education leads to better job opportunities, reducing the pressure on families to “marry off” their daughters for financial reasons.

  1. Changes Generational Thinking: Educated girls grow up to be educated mothers who will fight to keep their own daughters in school. The cycle begins to break.

That’s why we need to invest in schools, teachers, mentorship programs, and scholarships. Every child kept in school is one less child vulnerable to abuse.

Final Thoughts: It Starts With Us

If we want to end child marriage, we can’t wait for governments or global organizations to do all the work. We must start right where we are—in our homes, in our communities, and with our own mindsets.

Let’s talk to parents and guardians. Let’s educate young girls and boys about their rights. Let’s support local groups that are fighting to protect children. Let’s use our platforms, like this one on Steemit, to raise awareness and share stories.

Childhood is sacred. Every child deserves to live it fully before stepping into the adult responsibilities of marriage and family. When we protect their right to learn, to play, and to grow—we build a stronger, safer, and more just world for all.
