SLC S21 Week 5 - Herbal Remedies for Respiratory Health, Iron Deficiency, and Blood Pressure Control.

Introduction

Our health is as valuable as life itself, if we want to live longer, we must pay attention to our health. Besides, God has created plants so that we can all make use of it, not just as food, sold for money, but to aid, heal and restore our health.

Like it is always said, no plant is a waste, every plant has its importance and benefits. For the purpose of this engagement challenge, we will focus on herbs that aids in respiratory problems, build iron deficiency and also regulate the blood pressure.

Once again, welcome to my blog, I hope you'll learn from our lesson today.

Respiratory: Write three different herbs for the support of respiratory health other than discussed in this lecture. Include their benefits and reasons why they help in respiratory health. (2 Marks)

Respiratory problems are very delicate issues that needs to be taken care of. I'll highlight three herbs that can help in respiratory problems as follows.

  1. Ginger: Ginger is a root herbs that contains an anti inflammatory properties which helps to prevent infection and lungs damage.
    Benefits
  • Ginger cleanses and improves the lungs making breathing easier.
  • It relaxes the airways muscles making the lungs function properly
  • Study has it that ginger boost the immune system, fights against infections that may cause lungs damage.
  • Ginger helps to relieve congestion, helping the lungs to get rid of mucus and also soothes the symptoms of bronchitis.

August this year, I had respiratory problem as a result of growing mushrooms in my house. A friend recommended that I take ginger tea, by the time I took ginger tea for 3 days stretch, the symptoms were reduced and in 5 days, I began to feel better.

  1. Garlic: Garlic contains antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties can help in respiratory problems. For use, garlic can be chewed, freshly boiled and taken as tea. 1-2 gloves of garlic can be boiled for 10- 15mins, add honey to taste and lemon juice (optional), and be taken as tea.

Benefits

  • It reduces inflammation that is caused by congestion in the chest or lungs
  • It kills bacteria which causes lungs infection
  • Garlic tea can reduce mucus from the lungs, helping to clear the airways.
  • Studies also has it that taking if garlic can reduce lungs cancer if taken at least twice to thrice a week.

  1. Tumeric: Tumeric like ginger and garlic contains antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It is in the family of ginger as it is also a root herbs. Tumeric is said to contain cumin ingredients which helps in respiratory health.

Benefits

  • Due to tumeric antiviral properties, it can fight against certain respiratory problems caused by infections such as bronchitis

  • It reduces mucus production from the lungs

  • It reduces inflammation

  • It soothes soar throat and chest
    Boiling of 3-5g of tumeric and taking it as tea 2-5 times a week can be of a great help to respiratory system.

Iron Deficiency: Write about three herbs which help in the iron deficiency. Make a herbal remedy which can boost the iron level in the body. Please explain how it works in the body? (3 Marks)

Iron deficiency is a situation in which an individual has a very few iron in the body. By this, it reduces red blood cells in the human body. Below are herbs that helps building up of iron.

  1. Pumpkin: Pumpkin is a green leafy vegetables which contains high level of iron which helps in the building up hemoglobin and also the risk of aneamia.

Benefits

  1. Pumpkin helps in boosting up of blood for anaemic patients because of it content of haematic ingredients.
  2. As it contains proteins, pumpkin helps in improving body tissues such as the muscles and the nervous systems.

Making of it remedy

  1. A handful of pumpkin leaves about 3-5g
  2. Wash and blend it or squeeze it to bring out the juice( I squeezed mine), add about a cup of water to wash the juice out
  3. Strain out the juice
  4. Pour into a glass add milk (optional)
  5. Drink once a day for five days to two weeks to boost your immune system.

Taking this will boost your immune system and and also reduce the risk of anemia both in children and adults

  • Water leaf (talinum triangulare): This is a green vegetables that contains iron, calcium and potassium. Due to its iron content, water leaves are important in the following waty;
  1. It can prevent and also reduce anemia in oeoy
  2. It builds red blood cells in the body and also helps the red blood cells to remain longer.

  • Plantain: Plantain is from banana family. It contains iron, calcium and potassium. It also contains fibre, vitamins and minerals which are very essential in;
  1. Providing energy to anaemic patients
  2. Prevents poor immunity
  3. It is high I fibre and potassium

Plantain is best when it is unripe, either cooked or roasted, it is very good in build iron.

Blood Pressure: Write three herbs for the control of the high blood pressure and three to control the low blood pressure. Explain how the patients can use them in daily life to maintain and regulate their blood pressure. Make your preferred remedy for the control of blood pressure (3Marks)

  • Cayenne pepper: this can be added as spices to meal in order to control high blood pressure.
  1. It widens the blood vessels
  2. Improves blood flow
  3. It lowers blood pressure

  • Zobo tea (Hibiscus tea): this is got from the petals of hibiscus flower. 2-3 dried hibiscus flower can be boiled and taken as tea. Daily for 7days to two weeks to reduce blood pressure.

  • Miracle leaf (byophyllum pinnatum): Boiling of 10-15 of miracles or chewing 4-5 raw leaves all twice a day for 5 days can reduce high blood pressure drastically.

  1. Potatoes: regular intake of starchy foods 3-5 times in a week such as potatoes can increase blood pressure.
  2. Regular intake of beans as well can regulate low blood pressure.
  3. Salt is one spice that increases blood pressure. It can be added judiciously to food regularly to increase or regulate low blood pressure.

Wow! My friend, I never knew pepper can be used to control pressure, I think I will go do more research on it. As for the miracle leaf that one is as active as the name, treating different kind of ailments. I think I'll try most your recipes also. Yes pepper works a lot and even alligator pepper according to our teacher. That is why it is learning challenge.
